Eagles should absolutely rest the starters in Week 18 against the Washington Commanders
This really does not need to be complicated. The Philadelphia Eagles have nothing to prove in Week 18, and they definitely have nothing to gain that outweighs the risk of getting someone hurt before the playoffs.
Yes, the No. 2 seed is technically still on the table. Yes, there are scenarios where things break their way. And yes, home-field paths matter.
NFC Playoffs: Eagles will host one of three teams in the Wild Card round
However, sometimes the smartest move is the simplest one, which means that the Eagles and Nick Sirianni should plan on resting the starters and shifting focus over to what actually matters
This team has already clinched the NFC East. They are locked into hosting a playoff game. The core of this roster has taken a beating all season, especially along the offensive and defensive lines.
Lane Johnson is still dealing with a foot issue. Nakobe Dean just missed time with a hamstring. Jalen Carter is coming off a shoulder procedure. A.J. Brown literally just had teeth pulled out of his face last week.
There is zero reason to push it and here’s the part people keep ignoring.
The Eagles can still win this game without their starters.
Tanner McKee and the backup crew are more than capable of handling a bad Washington Commanders team that is limping to the finish line.
This is not a playoff-caliber opponent. This is not a team playing for anything meaningful. This is a group that just wants the season to end. Philly’s depth, even without the stars, is enough to get it done.
We literally watched the Eagles’ backups beat Giants starters in Week 18 last year. This is not some wild hypothetical. It already happened.
The bigger concern should be avoiding the nightmare scenario. One awkward tackle. One rolled ankle. One unnecessary snap that changes everything. You do not want to be the team that chased seeding and paid for it in January.
Let’s be honest about the No. 2 seed chase anyway. It requires help and it requires trusting the Lions to beat the Bears. It requires things outside the Eagles’ control. That is not how you should be making decisions this late in the season.
The playoffs are what matter. Health matters. Timing matters. Momentum matters. Getting through Week 18 clean matters more than anything.
So don’t overthink it. Sit the starters. Let Tanner McKee cook. Beat Washington anyway and get ready for the games that actually count.
That’s the move.
