Trevon Diggs Cowboys Waived

Shocker: Cowboys part ways with CB Trevon Diggs

The Dallas Cowboys did something on Monday that even their own fanbase didn’t see coming. According to reports, the Cowboys have released cornerback Trevon Diggs, sending one of the most recognizable faces of their defense to waivers with one game still left on the schedule.

Cowboys waive CB Trevon Diggs

Yes, that Trevon Diggs. The same guy who led the league with 11 interceptions in 2021, got paid by Dallas in 2023, and was supposed to be a cornerstone of the secondary for years to come.

Instead, the Cowboys decided now was the time to move on, which is jarring given the timing and the lack of any obvious short-term benefit for a team still technically playing out the season.

If Trevon Diggs clears waivers, he’ll become a free agent immediately. Dallas, meanwhile, will eat more than $12 million in dead money. That alone tells you this wasn’t a casual decision.

The Cowboys clearly reached a point where they felt the risk outweighed the reward, largely due to Diggs’ inability to stay on the field.

Since signing his extension, injuries have piled up, availability has dipped, and whatever patience Dallas had appears to be gone.

From a football standpoint, it’s still wild.

Teams don’t usually cut starting-caliber corners with ball-hawking upside in late December unless something has completely fractured behind the scenes or the organization has already turned the page on the season.

This feels like Dallas admitting the Trevon Diggs era didn’t work out the way they hoped, and they’re choosing to rip the band-aid off early rather than drag it into the offseason.

Now comes the fun part for everyone else. Diggs is young enough, talented enough, and experienced enough that a playoff team could absolutely take a flier on him if he clears waivers.

There’s also the obvious family angle, with his brother Stefon currently chasing a Super Bowl in New England. On that note, it was a tough day for the Diggs family because Stefon is in a world of trouble. Regardless, Trevon Diggs won’t be unemployed for long if teams believe his body can hold up.

For Cowboys fans, though, this one stings. Releasing Trevon Diggs midstream is an admission that the plan failed. Another reminder that Dallas keeps finding new ways to reset without ever actually getting over the hump.

For the rest of the league, it’s a reminder that sometimes even star players aren’t safe when an organization decides it’s done pretending everything is fine.
