Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe take over the Garden, Sixers beat up on the Knicks 130-119

Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe put on a show at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, combining for 62 points in a 130–119 win for the Sixers over the New York Knicks.

Joel Embiid added a highly efficient 26 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, while Paul George delivered timely plays late to help seal the victory.

The win capped a difficult road trip in which the Sixers rattled off three straight wins and finally started to look like a team finding its rhythm.

Sixers in the Garden:

Philadelphia now heads home for a Monday night matchup with the Denver Nuggets.

VJ Edgecombe continues to look way ahead of schedule. Guarding Jalen Brunson is a nightmare assignment for seasoned veterans, let alone rookies.

Brunson lives in the gray areas of the rulebook, constantly baiting defenders into fouls and free throws. Edgecombe refused to play that game. He stayed disciplined, kept his hands back, and made every possession feel like work for Brunson.

While Brunson still hit tough shots, nothing came easy when Edgecombe was on him, and that alone says a lot about the rookie’s defensive maturity.

What made Edgecombe’s night even more impressive was his offensive workload. Playing in the city where he built his high school reputation, he looked completely at home. Edgecombe scored 18 points in the first half, knocking down four threes and showing a confidence that has grown rapidly over the course of the season.

VJ Edgecombe. Ridiculous

His shooting development has been startling, especially considering how many questions surrounded that part of his game coming into the league. He is not just spotting up anymore. He is pulling up, stepping back, and attacking closeouts with purpose.

The Sixers’ backcourt was relentless. Edgecombe and Maxey looked tireless, playing with pace, confidence, and joy. They finished the night shooting 24-for-38 combined, and every Knicks run seemed to be answered by one of them.

The chemistry between the guards and Embiid continues to improve, especially as the lineup has finally stabilized. Nick Nurse pointed out postgame that the team has now played three straight games with the same starting lineup, something that has felt almost impossible this season.

Joel Embiid quietly controlled the game in his own way. He did not force the issue offensively, instead picking his spots and punishing New York when they overcommitted to Maxey. Embiid’s screening and playmaking opened the floor all night, and his passing out of double teams consistently led to quality looks.

He also enjoyed himself, capping his night with his first dunk of the season and soaking in the reaction from a Garden crowd that has never been shy about letting him hear it. Embiid thrives in that environment, and his career record against the Knicks reflects that.

Joel Embiid first dunk of the season

Tyrese Maxey, meanwhile, continues to be the foundation of everything Philadelphia does. Edgecombe’s emergence has been so loud that it almost distracts from how consistently dominant Maxey has been.

His third-quarter explosion flipped the game in the Sixers favor for good, as he buried deep jumpers and forced New York to change its entire defensive approach.

Once the Knicks started sending extra bodies at him, Embiid went to work in the middle of the floor. Maxey’s growth as a defender and rebounder has also stood out, especially now that he does not have to carry the entire offense on his back every possession.

Paul George deserves credit for embracing the unglamorous parts of the game. His scoring came and went, but his transition defense, rebounding, and late-game execution mattered. He hit a massive three down the stretch and followed it up with a game-sealing offensive rebound that led to points.

Those are the plays that win games, especially when stars are sharing the load.

The Sixers are not declaring anything yet, and they should not. Health is still the biggest question mark, especially with Embiid. But after a brutal stretch earlier in the season, this team is starting to look connected.

The ball is moving, roles are clearer, and the young backcourt is blossoming in real time. Edgecombe’s rapid development opens doors that did not seem realistic even a few months ago, and Maxey continues to look like an All-NBA guard in his prime.

Philadelphia is still digging out of a hole, as Nurse put it, but nights like this make it easier to believe there is something real forming. Three straight road wins, a confident locker room, and a backcourt that looks fearless on the biggest stages is not nothing.

The Sixers will take that momentum home and see if they can keep building when Denver comes to town tomorrow night at 8:30 PM.
