Don Mattingly gives Phillies a big upgrade in taking over as the team’s bench coach
The Phillies made it official on Monday, and it’s a move that’s been trending this way for weeks. Don Mattingly has been hired as the team’s new bench coach, giving Philadelphia Phillies one of the most experienced voices in baseball to stand next to Rob Thomson in the dugout.
This was never a secret. Don Mattingly’s name first surfaced in early November after the Phillies announced that Mike Calitri would move into a new role as Major League field coordinator.
From the jump, Dave Dombrowski made it clear the organization wanted someone with real managerial experience. He confirmed at the Winter Meetings that Mattingly was the target. The only thing holding it up was Mattingly’s contract expiring with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he had served as bench coach the past three seasons.
Now that paperwork is done, and the Phillies land a coach with as much credibility as anyone in the game.
Don Mattingly is the Phillies new bench coach
Don Mattingly brings far more than just a recognizable name. His playing career with the New York Yankees borders on Hall of Fame territory, and his resume as a manager and coach is extensive. He managed the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011 to 2015 and the Miami Marlins from 2016 through 2022.
Before that, he spent years on Joe Torre’s staff with the Yankees and Dodgers, learning the job from one of the most respected managers of all time.
Thomson has been open about how much he values Mattingly’s presence. The two go back to their days in the Yankees organization, and Thomson called it a perfect fit when asked about the possibility last month. He pointed to Mattingly’s intelligence, presence, and experience as exactly what the clubhouse needs.
That context matters, especially after Thomson took heat for in-game decisions during the 2025 NLDS against the Dodgers. Whether directly related or not, the Phillies clearly felt it was time to strengthen the bench coach role. Dombrowski has said this push actually started after the 2024 postseason, not just last October.
There is also the unavoidable family connection. Don Mattingly’s son, Preston Mattingly, is the Phillies’ general manager. Dombrowski addressed that head-on last month, saying he has zero concern about clubhouse confidentiality or blurred lines. His reasoning was simple. Both Don and Preston Mattingly have immense credibility, and professionalism is not something either lacks.
Preston echoed that sentiment, saying the organization shares one goal and one goal only: winning a World Series. From his perspective, his father fits the roster, fits the staff, and raises the overall standard inside the building.
That’s really what this move is about. The Phillies are not rebuilding. They are not experimenting. They are pushing chips in during a closing window and adding someone who has been in every possible baseball situation imaginable.
Don Mattingly joining the Phillies is not flashy and for a team trying to get over the final hump, that might be exactly the point.
Could the Phillies pivot focus to Bo Bichette?
