Kelee Ringo somehow managed the dumbest play of the year during Eagles loss to the Commanders
It is honestly hard to screw up this badly on one snap, but Kelee Ringo, against all odds, found a way against Washington.
Ringo was lined up across from Treylon Burks to start the play. Burks motions inside before the snap and then turns into a run blocker once the play starts. Right there should have been the end of the story.
Kelee Ringo actually diagnosed the play correctly and recovered on the bootleg. He was in the perfect position to make a play and stop 39-year old Josh Johnson but instead, his brain completely short-circuited.
He didn’t close on Josh Johnson. He peeled off and started looking for someone else to cover. The visual above tells you everything you need to know.
Instead of making the play right in front of him and moving downhill to force a throw or really, make an easy tackle, Ringo did not of it.
What was Kelee Ringo doing here?
The only explanation I can come up with is that Ringo thought there might be a receiver leaking out behind him and decided to gamble. If that was the thought process, it was still a terrible decision.
Terry McLaurin does come drifting across the back of the end zone late, but by the time he gets there, Johnson is basically standing in the end zone already. In case you haven’t noticed yet, the play was never about McLaurin. It was always about the quarterback.
This is football 101. When the quarterback keeps it on a bootleg and you have him dead to rights, you finish the play. You do not abandon the QB to go hunting ghosts.
To his credit, Kelee Ringo saw all the hate on social media and responded with an Instagram story. Gotta love the self-awareness here.

Eagles’ backups fail to deliver, but the bigger picture still favors Philly
It was a brutal mental mistake in a game where the Eagles were already playing with backups, and it directly contributed to Washington taking advantage late. Sometimes young players make young mistakes. This one was about as loud and costly as it gets
