Cristopher Sanchez answers the call, will pitch for Dominican Republic in the WBC

Cristopher Sánchez is officially taking his breakout season to the world stage.

According to ESPN’s Enrique Rojas, the Phillies ace will pitch for Team Dominican Republic in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Sánchez had to get clearance from the Phillies to make it happen, but now it’s real. One of the best pitchers in baseball is about to wear DR across his chest, and he’s walking into that clubhouse as the guy.

The Dominican roster is always stacked with star bats, but pitching has been the question mark in recent WBCs. Sánchez should slot in as their No. 1 starter, and frankly, he’s earned it. After what he did in 2025, there isn’t a more reliable arm on that staff.

Cristopher Sánchez, 29, turned himself into a legitimate ace last season. He threw 202 innings with a 2.50 ERA, punched out 212 hitters, and finished second in National League Cy Young voting. He also led the entire NL in Baseball Reference WAR at 8.0.

This is also a big deal for the Phillies, who are going to be everywhere at the WBC.

Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and Brad Keller will suit up for Team USA. Sánchez will be joined on Team Dominican Republic by Johan Rojas. Edmundo Sosa will represent Panama, and Garrett Stubbs will catch for Team Israel.

It gets even crazier when you look at the rotation. Three of the Phillies’ projected Opening Day starters are set to pitch in the tournament.

Aaron Nola will throw for Team Italy. Taijuan Walker will pitch for Team Mexico. Cristopher Sánchez will headline the DR staff. Jesús Luzardo, who pitched for Venezuela in 2023, is reportedly sitting this one out, while Zack Wheeler is expected to miss the start of the season as he continues recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery.

This is both awesome and slightly terrifying, but mostly awesome.

The Phillies built this roster to win now, and Cristopher Sánchez emerging as a true ace is a massive reason why. Seeing him take the ball for the Dominican Republic as their top starter is a reminder of just how far he’s come. A few years ago, this would’ve sounded insane. Now it feels obvious.

Cristopher Sánchez is no longer a breakout story. He’s a front-line starter in Major League Baseball, and in 2026, the whole world is about to see it.
