Stadium Series Goalie Fight Raymond James Stadium

WATCH: Jeremy Swayman and Andrei Vasilevskiy save the Stadium Series with an epic goalie fight

Hand up. I had my doubts about the NHL’s decision to play this year’s Stadium Series game in Florida. Just didn’t make sense with the sun, humidity, and people showing up in flip flops. Still doesn’t really… just like the decision to not have floor seats around the rink itself, but that’s beyond the point of this article.

All of those Stadium Series doubts are dead because Jeremy Swayman and Andrei Vasilevskiy gave us the rarest kind of hockey moment in the NHL Stadium Series. They dropped the gloves and turned the whole night into instant history.

The game was already chippy, and then Brandon Hagel parked himself at the crease and kept hacking after the whistle. Swayman did what every goalie has wanted to do since the beginning of time. He snapped and tackled him like a rabid dog.

It set off the usual scrum, but the surprise was what happened next. Vasilevskiy skated out toward center ice to challenge him, and Swayman took the invitation immediately.

Watching two goalies try to fight in full gear is always hilarious. They’re basically 50 pounds heavier, their legs are locked into astronaut boots, and neither one can move like a normal human. That’s what makes it great. The benches went nuts, the crowd went nuts, and everyone at home was suddenly locked in.

The fight lit a fuse. Tampa Bay used that energy to flip the entire game. The Tampa Bay Lightning pulled off a historic comeback and beat the Boston Bruins in a game that had everything, including the goalie fight that everyone will remember.

Also, it’s worth noting this is now the second goalie fight in the last few weeks. We just had the Bobrovsky vs. Nedeljkovic chaos recently, and now Florida delivers another one. Something about playing hockey in Florida makes goalies lose their minds, and honestly, I support it.

Bottom line, the outdoor game worked. The vibe worked. The moment worked. If you’re trying to sell someone on hockey, you don’t explain systems or zone entries. You show them two goalies fighting under the lights at Raymond James Stadium, and you let the sport do the rest.

Again, why no floor seats around the rink? It’s the only thing missing…
