WATCH: Kay Adams awkward conversation with Cooper DeJean about Nikki Bella dating rumors

Oh, brother. I am very sad to report that our girl Kay Adams stepped in it this week, and not in the fun, harmless, radio-row way.

During a Super Bowl media hit with Cooper DeJean, what should have been a quick football conversation turned into an uncomfortable fishing expedition about his personal life, specifically rumors linking him to Nikki Bella and you could literally watch the moment our guy wanted out.

Obviously, none of this should actually be complicated. Media row is supposed to be light, fast, a little goofy. Nobody expects “60 Minutes” but there is still a basic feel for the room you need to have, and once Cooper DeJean gave the most polite, obvious deflection in human history, that should have been the end of it.

“Alright… good one. I don’t know about that, she’s a good friend.”

Fair enough. Cooper DeJean handled it perfectly but we all know that is PR language for please stop. Unfortunately, the questions kept coming. Kay Adams couldn’t help herself with more attempts to get him to play along with something he clearly had zero interest in entertaining publicly. It turned a normal interview into a clip where the player is stuck smiling while internally begging for a trap door.

If this were some grizzled ten-year vet who loves the spotlight, maybe you push.

Cooper DeJean is a young cornerstone player representing the Eagles on the biggest stage in the sport. Maybe, just maybe, we let him talk about football instead of trying to manufacture a viral dating rumor moment.

Again, all I’m doing is pointing out the obvious. I love Kay Adams and she is actually good at her job to the point that players like talking to her, which is why the lack of awareness here stood out so much. You have to know when a guy is uncomfortable. You have to know when you’ve reached the line.

Kay Adams blew past it. People online called it cringe because it was cringe. Not evil. Not scandalous. Just awkward and avoidable.

There’s also almost no upside. If DeJean laughs and flirts back, cool, you get your internet moment. If he does what most normal humans would do, which is retreat politely, now the host looks like they’re prying and the player looks trapped.

Congratulations, everyone loses.

Meanwhile Cooper DeJean could not have handled it better.

Calm, respectful, complimentary, never rude, never dismissive. He gave absolutely nothing inflammatory, which is exactly what a team wants from a young guy in that spot. Total pro.

Kay Adams later said she didn’t mean to make him uncomfortable. Fine. Intent matters. But reading the situation matters more, and the situation was screaming pivot.

Ask about the defense. Ask about the Super Bowl. Ask about literally anything else. Instead we got gossip hour, and it felt cheap.

That’s why fans reacted the way they did. Not because they’re sensitive. Because they watched someone keep poking after the answer had already been given. Sometimes the story is not what you can ask. It’s what you probably shouldn’t.
