WATCH: Jase Richardson’s dunk contest dream ends in painful wipeout
The NBA Dunk Contest just isn’t what it used to be, and Jase Richardson’s wipeout on Saturday night was the perfect example of that.
The 20-year-old Orlando guard went up for what was supposed to be a pretty routine setup. Toss it off the side of the backboard, catch the ricochet, spin into a windmill, easy money. The problem? Jase Richardson never actually grabbed the ball off the backboard. He went up, came down, and the whole thing unraveled in real time.

And yeah, I feel for the kid. That’s a brutal moment on a national stage. Nobody signs up to be the viral clip of the night for the wrong reasons.
But this is the bigger issue. The Dunk Contest used to be appointment viewing because it featured aliens. Superstars. Guys who felt larger than life. Now we’re watching random young players from around the league because the NBA can’t convince anyone truly notable to do it anymore.
That’s the sad state of NBA All-Star Weekend right now. The league keeps tweaking around the edges instead of fixing the core problem.
At least Nick Wright actually floated a real solution. It might be time for Adam Silver to start listening.
