Nick Castellanos Gold Glove First Base Padres

WATCH: One game into Spring Training and Nick Castellanos looks like a Gold Glove first baseman

One game into Spring Training with the San Diego Padres and Nick Castellanos is already making diving plays at first base that have people losing their minds.

One split squad game in February and Nick Castellanos looks like a modern day Keith Hernandez out there at first base. Go figure.

Gold Glove First Baseman Nick Castellanos

This is just how it works. Nick Castellanos spent years in Philadelphia and his time there ended the way it ended, quietly, awkwardly, and without much of a sendoff worth writing home about.

Now he’s in San Diego for five minutes and he’s making highlight reel defensive plays and the whole baseball internet is talking about it. Of course he is. This is exactly the kind of thing that happens.

To be clear, nobody is panicking here. One diving stop in a spring training game does not a Gold Glover make. The Padres are deploying him at three different positions because they’re not entirely sure what they have either.

Nick Castellanos is a platoon option, a depth piece, a veteran right-handed bat they’re hoping can fill some gaps. That’s the reality of the situation regardless of what the highlights look like in late February.

If Nick Castellanos goes to San Diego and somehow reinvents himself as a defensive wizard while hitting .290 with 25 home runs this season, that would be perfectly, completely, absolutely on brand for the Philadelphia experience.

Just the way things go around here sometimes. We’re watching, Casty. We’re watching.
