Promises Kept: USA Hockey honors Johnny Gaudreau after Gold Medal win

There is one name that might matter more than all of them. One name that stands above the rest as the heart and soul of what this team has become. One name that was not on the ice in Italy but has been with this group every single step of the way.

Johnny Gaudreau.

Johnny Gaudreau, known more commonly in the Philadelphia area and across America as Johnny Hockey, would have been there. Team USA made sure his family knew he was on the projected roster for these Olympics. He was taken from us far too soon on August 29, 2024, along with his brother Matthew, and the hole that left in the sport of hockey and in the lives of everyone who loved him cannot be measured. But his spirit never left this team.

His jersey was in the locker room for the World Juniors. His jersey was in the locker room when USA won their first ever World Championship last summer. His jersey was in the locker room for every single game of these Olympics. Every time Team USA touched the ice in Milan, they carried Johnny with them.

And the moment the gold medal was secured, before the celebration had barely started, these guys made sure Johnny’s jersey got out on the ice immediately. That was the first priority. That tells you everything you need to know about the brotherhood on this team.

A promise kept, Johnny Gaudreau.

Matthew Tkachuk and Zach Werenski went up into the stands and brought Johnny’s daughter Noa and his son Johnny down for the team photo. If you were holding it together before that moment, you weren’t after it. There was no chance.

This is so much bigger than a hockey game. It always was.

These guys did not just win a gold medal for their country. They won it for Johnny. They carried him through every practice, every game, every overtime shift, and when it was over they made sure he was standing right there with them in the photograph.

The legends of USA Hockey will be forever remembered in American history books, not just for winning a gold medal but for never letting go of Johnny Gaudreau, who was with them every step of the way.

That is what brotherhood looks like. Rest easy, Johnny Gaudreau. Promises kept…
