Phillies Francisco Renteria Phillies International Signing Day

Phillies’ International Prospect Class ranks among the best in baseball

The Phillies have been putting in serious work on the international market and the results are turning heads across the league.

According to MLB.com, their latest international signing class ranks among the best in all of baseball and a few of these names are worth knowing right now.

Phillies International Prospect Headliner: Francisco Renteria

Renteria checks in as the No. 3 international prospect in the class. The Venezuelan outfielder is a genuine five-tool talent drawing comparisons to MLB’s top overall prospect Konnor Griffin, which is not a comparison evaluators throw around casually.

At just 15 years old, Renteria was already collecting hits off former big leaguers in the Venezuelan Major League. The bat speed is there, the plus-plus raw power is there, and the Phillies paid $4 million to make sure no one else got to him first. That is a significant investment and it signals how seriously the organization believes in this kid.

Also worth watching is Venezuelan shortstop Juan Parra, who comes in at No. 39 overall and has reportedly blown evaluators away with his work ethic and his natural fluidity at the position.

The fact that he trained with Phillies legend Bobby Abreu through MLB’s Trainer Partnership Program is a nice touch. If any of that rubs off, the Phillies got a mid-six-figure steal.

Beyond those two, the Phillies also landed some intriguing lower-dollar upside pieces. Justin Burgos is a 6-foot-5 right-hander out of the Dominican Republic who is already sitting 92-93 mph consistently with the makings of a four-pitch mix. And Alexandre Moreti quietly made history as the Phillies’ first ever amateur signing from Japan.

This organization has been doing a lot of things right lately. The international pipeline is one more example of it.

  1. AGAIN?! What’s with all this hope? Who is paying you for this Eagles and Phillies propaganda? This is North Korea level optimism, even they will be impressed.
