WATCH: Trump announces Connor Hellebuyck will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom
With the gold medal-winning U.S. Men’s Olympic Hockey Team standing in the gallery, President Trump announced that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Most of the room went nuts.
Whatever you think about the State of the Union, Tuesday night gave us a genuinely great sports moment buried inside of the slop.
Connor Hellebuyck honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom
Earlier in the day the team had visited the White House, and Hellebuyck was photographed with the Secretary of Defense seal. The joke writes itself, because for two weeks in Milan, he basically was the Department of Defense.
Connor Hellebuyck: The Secretary of Defense
The defining moment came against Canada, a roster loaded with NHL stars that most people assumed was unbeatable. Hellebuyck turned aside 41 shots in a 2-1 overtime win, Jack Hughes scored the goal, and the United States ended a 46-year gold medal drought that dated back to the 1980 Miracle on Ice.
For a kid from Commerce, Michigan who has already built one of the best goaltending resumes in the NHL with multiple Vezina Trophies, this is a career peak moment. It’s also a little surreal to watch a Winnipeg Jet get recognized on the biggest stage in American politics, but that’s the world we’re living in and it’s kind of great.
Politicians will spend the next week arguing about the rest of the speech. The sports world is focused on the goalie who stood in front of a Canadian firing squad, didn’t blink, and is now heading back to Washington to pick up the country’s highest civilian honor.
Connor Hellebuyck, American icon. Not a sentence anyone had on their 2026 bingo card, but here we are.
