Viral TikTok post suggests US Women’s gold medal hockey team should challenge US Men’s with winner determining women’s voting rights

We are now at the point where people on social media are suggesting that the US Women’s Olympic gold medal hockey team should play the US Men’s National Hockey Team, with women’s voting rights on the line for the loser.

US Women’s gold medal hockey team should challenge US Men’s with winner determining women’s voting rights….???

This needs to stop.

Not because the sports argument is close. It is not close. But because this kind of content is actively doing a disservice to US Women’s hockey who just won a gold medal and deserve to have that celebrated without being dragged into an idiotic internet debate about things that have nothing to do with hockey.

Let’s get the sports argument out of the way first because it is not complicated. The US Women’s team would lose that game by a score that would be uncomfortable to read. Not because the women are bad hockey players.

They are exceptional hockey players who just dominated an Olympic tournament and won gold. But the physical gap between elite male hockey players and elite female hockey players is not a matter of opinion or ideology. It is biology.

The men are bigger, faster, and stronger in ways that directly determine outcomes in a contact sport played on ice at high speed. The best women’s national team in the world would struggle against a team of elite 15-year-old boys.

That is a documented reality that has been tested in practice sessions and scrimmages for years. Against the actual US Men’s National Hockey Team, the outcome would not be a game. It would be something else entirely.

Obviously, none of that is a criticism of the US women’s hockey team. It is just physics.

What is actually ridiculous is that we are having this conversation at all right now. Jack Hughes stood at center ice in Newark and nearly cried talking about how proud he was of both the men’s and women’s teams.

Jack Hughes got a hero’s welcome in Newark but the Michelob Ultra promotion was a complete whiff

Hilary Knight, the most decorated American hockey player who has ever lived, said the relationship between the two teams is built on genuine respect and that a quick lapse was being allowed to overshadow everything both groups accomplished.

When Hilary Knight, the most decorated American hockey player in history speaks, it’s best to just shut up and listen

Both of them, independently, asked the internet to stop doing exactly what the internet is currently doing. And here we are anyway.

The US Women’s Hockey Team won a gold medal. They beat Canada in overtime. They were dominant from start to finish in Milan and every single player on that roster deserves to come home and be celebrated without their achievement being weaponized for social media content.

The fact that people are still manufacturing reasons to pit the two teams against each other after Hughes and Knight both addressed it directly is exhausting and it reflects poorly on everyone participating in it.

Celebrate both teams. They both won gold. That has never happened before. That is the story. Everything else is noise.
