Andrew Painter Spring Training vs Yankees

Phillies Updates: Aaron Nola on the bump today, with Cristopher Sanchez and Andrew Painter set to make Spring debuts this weekend

The Phillies rotation storylines are starting to heat up.

Cristopher Sanchez, fresh off a second-place finish in 2025 NL Cy Young voting, makes his Grapefruit League debut Saturday afternoon against the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin.

Sanchez is basically a lock to get the ball on Opening Day, March 26 against the Texas Rangers at Citizens Bank Park. Saturday will be the first chance to see where he is coming out of the break.

The more anticipated start of the weekend might be Sunday, when Andrew Painter makes his first spring appearance against the New York Yankees in Clearwater.

Andrew Painter will start for the Phillies on Sunday

Andrew Painter did not pitch in Grapefruit League action last spring while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so Sunday will be the first real public look at the 22-year-old as a healthy pitcher in live game action.

Painter is expected to be in the season-opening rotation, and the organization has made no secret of their belief in him. If you have been waiting to see what Painter looks like on the other side of the surgery, Sunday is your first opportunity.

The Cole Hamels comparison is going to come up this weekend and it should.

In 2004, a 20-year-old Hamels who had never pitched above Single-A faced the Yankees in his first Grapefruit League appearance at Legends Field in Tampa. He struck out Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Tony Clark in order, all on changeups.

That moment announced him. Nobody is putting that kind of pressure on Painter before he throws a single pitch, but the parallel is there and Phillies fans who were around for that Hamels start will be thinking about it on Sunday.

The rest of the Phillies weekend schedule fills out nicely.

Aaron Nola faces the Marlins on Friday afternoon in Clearwater, with the Phillies also sending a split-squad to Lakeland for a second Tigers game with Jean Cabrera starting.

If you are not making the trip to Florida, Friday’s Marlins game is on NBC Sports Philadelphia Plus, Saturday’s Blue Jays game comes through the Toronto feed on NBC Sports Philadelphia, and Sunday’s Yankees start with Painter is on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

That Sunday broadcast is the one to clear your schedule for.
