Sixers lose to the Hawks, fall to 8th in the East, and now Tyrese Maxey might be hurt
The Sixers lost to the Atlanta Hawks 126-116 on Saturday night and now Tyrese Maxey is getting X-rays on his right hand after a collision with Adem Bona in the final seconds of the game.
A Brutal Night for the Sixers in Atlanta…
Maxey led the team with 31 points before the injury. Quentin Grimes had 26. Kelly Oubre added 24. On a night when the Sixers were already without Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe, and Paul George, those three carried the offense well enough to lead by seven at halftime.
Then Atlanta outscored them in the second half behind 35 points and 10 rebounds from Jalen Johnson and 24 from Nickeil Alexander-Walker and that was that.
The Sixers are now in 8th place, a half game behind both the Magic and the Heat, with 19 games left in the season and a road trip to Cleveland on Monday.
They are 4-6 over their last 10. They are in the Play-In Tournament. All of the progress from the last few weeks of steady basketball is suddenly hanging by a thread.
Now we are waiting to find out how serious Maxey’s hand is.
Nick Nurse had no update after the game and said Tyrese Maxey would get X-rays…
That is never a reassuring answer. Maxey is the engine of this entire team right now. Without Embiid, without George, without Edgecombe, Maxey is the one guy they absolutely cannot afford to lose. If those X-rays come back with bad news, this season could get very ugly very fast.
Monday in Cleveland. Pray for good news on the hand.
