Ken Griffey Jr. is taking great WBC photos and I am choosing to be slightly conflicted about it

Ken Griffey Jr. showed up to the World Baseball Classic this week with a camera the size of a small bazooka and took some genuinely incredible photos.

Ken Griffey Jr’s shot of Kyle Schwarber celebrating with Aaron Judge after the Team USA win over Brazil went viral and rightfully so. He was credentialed for multiple games in Houston, fully locked in on the sideline, doing the thing.

The Kid is a legend. One of the best to ever play. Mashing home runs on pure God-given talent during a steroid era while everyone else was juicing, backwards hat, effortless swing, the whole deal.

I love Ken Griffey Jr. That is not up for debate but I have to be honest about something.

At what point do we stop absolutely losing our minds every time a famous former athlete picks up a camera? Ken Griffey Jr has been doing this for a few years now. He had a media pass for Lionel Messi’s MLS debut in 2023, he brought his camera to the 2025 Masters and every single time, the reaction is the same.

Oh my god. Ken Griffey Jr. takes photos. He is incredible at everything.

Is he though? Or does he have the best equipment money can buy, unlimited field access that no regular photographer could ever get, and a built-in audience that will go crazy for anything he posts?

Again, I am not saying the photos are bad. They are genuinely good.

The Schwarber-Judge shot is awesome. But I also think about the credentialed photographers who have spent their entire careers mastering this craft, grinding to get access, and then Ken Griffey Jr. shows up and gets all the love and all the clicks and all the praise.

If I spent twenty years building a career as a sports photographer and a Hall of Fame baseball player waltzed in with a $15,000 lens and became the talk of the tournament, I am not sure how thrilled I would be.
