Beji Gil Mexico Team USA Rematch World Baseball Classic

Mexico Manager Benji Gil wants a rematch with Team USA but he should probably worry about Italy first

Respect the confidence from Mexico’s manager Benji Gil but also, read the room.

Benji Gil stepped to the podium after his team’s 5-3 loss to Team USA on Monday night and said he wants a rematch more than anything else in the world. He is apparently already thinking about Miami and a potential second meeting with the Americans in the knockout round.

To be fair, a rematch is absolutely possible. If Mexico gets past Italy on Wednesday and advances out of pool play, the bracket could set up a quarterfinal or even a championship meeting with Team USA in Miami.

That would be must-watch television and everyone knows it. Benji Gil is not wrong to want it but here is the situation he is currently in.

Mexico is 2-1. Italy is 2-0. Italy beat Great Britain and Brazil and has not lost a game yet in this tournament. If Mexico does not beat Italy on Wednesday, they are going home. Full stop.

Current World Baseball Classic Pool Play Standings:

Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer. Roman Anthony put one 417 feet over the right-center wall. Paul Skenes struck out seven in four shutout innings in his WBC debut.

Mexico just got handled by the Americans in front of your own fans who took over the ballpark in Houston and you want to get back on the podium and talk about a rematch and then continue by saying that you would beat the boys in red, white, and blue in the championship?

I mean seriously, take it one game at a time, Benji.

Look, the competitive fire is great. Mexico played hard all night and Jarren Duran hit two solo shots to make it interesting late. The crowd was electric. The game was everything the WBC is supposed to be. Benji Gil clearly believes in his team and that is fine.

But there is no rematch if you do not get out of pool play. Italy is not a pushover. They are 2-0, Phillies prospect Dante Nori hit two home runs for them on Saturday, and they are playing with real confidence right now.

Italy faces Team USA on Tuesday and one more win likely clinches their advancement regardless of what happens Wednesday.

Mexico’s path is simple and unforgiving. Win against Italy on Wednesday or go home.

There is no other scenario that maximizes their chances. A loss and they are watching the knockout round from their couch.

Benji Gil and Mexico can dream about Miami and Team USA if his squad takes business on Wednesday night against Italy, a game that will be broadcasted on Tubi (lol). Just win first, sweetheart, then you can get back to your fever dream of beating Team USA if and when you arrive to the single elimination rounds.

FOR GLORY.
