Chase Utley is headed to the Phillies’ Wall of Fame and Cooperstown might be next
Chase Utley is getting his bronze plaque at Citizens Bank Park on August 7th. Phillies owner John Middleton made it official Thursday morning during a press conference at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater. It was only a matter of time.
Chase Utley will be inducted on Friday, August 7th
Chase Utley is the greatest second baseman in Phillies history and one of the most important pieces of the best era this franchise has ever seen. The 2008 World Series. The 2009 pennant. Five straight NL East titles from 2007 to 2011. That run does not happen without him and everyone in that organization knows it.
Chase Utley on being inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame:
Some of that family was there to share the moment. Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard are in camp as guest instructors.
Utley said he was up late chatting with Hamels the night before, going back through everything they built together in Clearwater over the years. When asked where those memory lane conversations usually end up, Hamels did not hesitate, saying that it all revolves around the legend himself, Pat Burrell. Hilarious, really.
The Wall of Fame is only part of the story.
Chase Utley received 59.1 percent of the Hall of Fame vote in his third year on the ballot, a massive jump from the 39.8 percent he got in 2025.
The threshold for induction is 75 percent. To put that trajectory in context, Andruw Jones got just 19.4 percent in his third year on the ballot and ended up at 78.4.
Carlos Beltran got 46.5 percent in year three and finished at 84.2. Both are being inducted this summer. If Utley makes a similar jump in 2027, he is in Cooperstown.
Utley also went to bat for Jimmy Rollins on Thursday, who sits at 25.4 percent in his fifth year on the ballot and has not been climbing at the same pace.
There is a real possibility Chase Utley gets to Cooperstown before his double play partner does, which would be a strange outcome for two guys who defined that infield together.
Howard, Hamels, and others from the 2008 core will have their Wall of Fame moments too. It is all coming. August 7th at Citizens Bank Park is where it starts.
