Phillies Spring Injury Updates: Zack Wheeler, Orion Kerkering, and Aidan Miller

The Phillies have a few moving parts on the injury front heading into the weekend.

Zack Wheeler threw his fifth bullpen session on Tuesday and will throw his first live batting practice on Saturday. It went well, as far as bullpens go. Wheeler is working his way back into the rotation and this is the next step in that process.

Get well soon Zack Wheeler

Orion Kerkering will also throw live BP on Saturday. The right-hander has been sidelined throughout Phillies Spring Training with a strained right hamstring and Saturday will be his second live session.

Rob Thomson said there is “possibly” enough time for Kerkering to be ready for Opening Day. Possibly is not exactly a ringing endorsement but it is better than nothing.

The Aidan Miller situation is the most concerning update of the three. The Phillies’ number one prospect was reassigned to minor league camp on Wednesday after never seeing the field this spring due to a recurring back injury.

Miller came into camp expecting to play shortstop and third base and did not get a single at-bat. He even flew to Philadelphia late last week to try to get things sorted out.

Nothing worked.

A back injury that keeps coming back on a 21-year-old infielder is not something to brush off, and the fact that he could not get healthy enough to play in a single spring training game is worth watching closely.
