Austin Wells crushes home run to mercy rule Korea, tells reporters he feels ‘more Dominican every day’

Austin Wells is a clear outlier on this Dominican Republic roster and he could not care less. Wells, a Yankees catcher who qualifies for the DR through his mother’s Dominican heritage, sent the Dominican Republic to the semifinals last night with a three-run homer off the second deck in right field in the seventh inning that triggered the 10-run mercy rule and ended Korea’s tournament right then and there.

After the game, Austin Wells summed up his entire WBC experience in one sentence.

“I feel more Dominican every day.”

Shoutout Austin Wells. The self-awareness is incredible. The DR locker room videos have been must-watch content throughout this tournament and Wells has been right in the middle of all of it, a white Yankees catcher fully embracing every single moment of being on a roster full of the most electric players in the world.

The game itself was never really in doubt.

The Dominican Republic jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and suffocated Korea from the opening pitch. Cristopher Sanchez was dominant on the mound, throwing five shutout innings with eight strikeouts and an electric slider and changeup that both ran a 100 percent whiff rate on the night.

Fernando Tatis Jr. had two RBIs. Manny Machado, who had been grinding at the plate all spring, showed up in an elimination game the way Hall of Famers do, going 2-for-4 with an RBI single during the third inning rally. Junior Caminero added two hits and scored twice.

The bats quieted for a few innings after the early explosion. Then Austin Wells stepped in and ended the conversation entirely with one swing.

The Dominican Republic meets Team USA on Sunday at 8 PM ET in Miami on FS1. Austin Wells will be feeling very Dominican that evening too.

But here is the thing. All the fun and good vibes in that locker room are about to run directly into Paul Skenes on Sunday night and that changes everything.

The entire Dominican Republic lineup, Wells included, is about to experience something they have not seen in this tournament yet. Paul Skenes against that roster in a WBC semifinal in Miami is going to be must-watch television and one of the better pitching matchups baseball has produced in years.

Enjoy the celebration while it lasts.
