Don’t Show Topper: Clayton Kershaw had someone toss him a beer in the bullpen during USA-Canada quarterfinal game at the WBC
During last night’s 5-3 Team USA win over Canada, the FOX broadcast found Clayton Kershaw out in the bullpen cracking open an ice cold beer while watching his fellow Americans try to hold on for dear life late. It was Clayton Kershaw’s final day on the roster before his departure and honestly, that is the correct way to spend it.
Clayton Kershaw got tossed an ice cold beer in the bullpen:
Look, I already know the reaction. Clayton Kershaw is washed. He had no business being on this roster to begin with at this point in his career. He is leaving before the semifinals against a Dominican Republic team that just mercy-ruled Korea.
Plenty of reporters and fans are going to point at this and say it is proof that Team USA does not take the WBC seriously. I am not going to be one of them.
Nobody needed Clayton Kershaw on this roster.
He was here out of respect for what he has meant to the game and his presence did not prevent any meaningful piece from getting a spot. He didn’t pitch which was fine, and now he is watching the quarterfinals with a cold one in the bullpen on his way out the door.
That is not a lack of respect for the tournament. That is a future Hall of Famer enjoying his last moments with this group before heading back to prepare for what is almost certainly the final season of his career. Let the man have his beer.

Someone who would absolutely not let the man have his beer is Rob Thomson.
After Nick Castellanos infamously cracked open an El Presidente in the Marlins dugout while the Phillies were playing Miami, it essentially poisoned the entire relationship between Castellanos and the organization.
Thomson was furious. The Phillies eventually ate $20 million and cut him loose before this spring training. Rob Thomson runs a dry dugout and he will let you know about it.
Different vibes in the Team USA bullpen. Kershaw is checking out, cracking a beer, and watching the boys punch their ticket to Miami. No harm done.
