Andrew Painter dominated the Braves in his final Spring start and the timing could not be better
Andrew Painter threw four shutout innings against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday in what was likely his final Spring Training start before Opening Day and it was exactly what the Phillies needed to see heading into the regular season.
Fifty-two pitches. One hit. One walk. Three strikeouts. A 2.31 ERA on the Spring. Clean, efficient, and most importantly, the fastball sat between 96 and 97 mph consistently across all four innings. That last part matters more than the stat line.
Andrew Painter’s last start of the Spring was his best
In his previous Spring start, Painter’s velocity dipped from 97 in the first inning down to under 95 by the end of his outing. That kind of drop raises questions about durability and stamina for a 22-year-old who has not yet proven he can hold his stuff deep into starts at the big league level.
Wednesday answered that question, at least for one more outing. The velo held. The command was there. He looked like a rotation piece.

The context matters here. Zack Wheeler is on the IL recovering from thoracic outlet surgery and is not expected back until May at the earliest.
That means Andrew Painter is not just a depth option this season. He is a legitimate rotation piece from day one and the Phillies need him to be. A mediocre 2025 season raised real questions about whether the hype was sustainable and whether he had developed some mechanical habits that were going to be hard to shake.
Painter addressed it directly, saying he identified some bad habits he picked up last year and has been working to get back to his natural delivery. The Spring numbers back up that claim. He did not allow a run in his first two outings covering five innings, got hit around a bit in start three, and then came back with this on Wednesday.
Andrew Painter lowered his Spring Training ERA to 2.31
The Phillies have one of the better rotations in the National League when everyone is healthy. Sanchez is the ace. Luzardo is locked in. Nola needs to bounce back from his worst season. Walker is holding a spot until Wheeler returns. And Painter, when he is right, is the kind of arm that makes a very good rotation into a great one.
Wednesday suggested he might actually be right. That is all anyone needed to see.
