Sixers beat Jazz 126-116, move up two spots in the Eastern Conference Standings

The Sixers finished their West Coast road trip 2-1 after beating the Jazz 126-116 on Saturday in Salt Lake City. They are now 39-32 and somehow in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. With eleven games left.

Quentin Grimes led the way with 25 points on 9-for-15 shooting. VJ Edgecombe posted 22 points and 13 rebounds, a new career high in rebounding for the rookie.

Neither Edgecombe nor Edwards were as electric as they were against the Kings on Thursday but both played with the confidence of guys who just had the best games of their careers. The development happening in real time on this roster while the stars are out is genuinely something to watch.

The bad news is that Dominick Barlow sprained his ankle less than four minutes into the game on a drive and did not return. The Sixers are still without Embiid, Maxey, Oubre, and George and now they can add Barlow to the list. The injury report for this team has been a running joke for weeks.

The good news is that the standings moved in their favor on Saturday in a meaningful way. The Magic have lost four straight. The Heat have lost four straight. The Sixers started the day in ninth place and ended it in seventh, tied with Atlanta for sixth at 39-32. They are one game behind Toronto in fifth. The picture tightened considerably over the course of one afternoon without the Sixers even having to do anything about it.

Eastern Conference Standings: Sixers now the 7th Seed

Paul George returns from his suspension Wednesday against the Bulls. Embiid and Maxey are both expected back before the end of the month. If this team can get all three of those guys back healthy and string some wins together over the final eleven games, the seeding conversation gets very interesting very fast.

The Thunder come to town Monday night. That one is going to be hard. But the Sixers are in a better position tonight than they were this morning and that has not been true enough times this season.

The grind continues and it is actually working.
