Wild Story: Darius Slay was en route to the Eagles sideline when Buffalo called
Darius Slay really wanted to come back to the Eagles last season. So much so that when Buffalo — the team that ended up making a push for him after his release from Pittsburgh — came calling, he basically shut it down on the spot.
In a podcast clip making the rounds, Slay said he was in the middle of booking a flight to Los Angeles for the Eagles-Chargers Week 14 matchup when Buffalo reached out. Literally right as he was locking in plans to go join the Eagles, the Bills tried to swoop in.
Darius Slay: “I don’t know what [Buffalo] was thinking”
Usually, I’d be a boomer about stuff like this — a player trying to force his way to a specific team just because he can. In Darius Slay’s case, I’m pretty indifferent.
For one, he wanted to come back to Philly. I can always respect that. And two, he was 34, staring down the final year of his career. I don’t blame him for not wanting to go to Buffalo. Would you want to spend your last season in that frozen wasteland? I don’t think so.
I don’t know if Slay would’ve made any real, tangible difference for the Birds this past year. But it is nice knowing he had the Eagles circled from the jump.
