Phillies First Pitch Ronald McDonald, McDonald’s mascot Ambassador Satoshi Katahira, Consulate General of Japan in New York

The Phillies call on Ronald McDonald and the Japanese Consul General to throw out first pitches at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday

Shoutout to Phillies Tailgate on X, who is the single best follow for any and all Phillies updates and who I genuinely thought had been hacked when he posted this Friday evening.

The ceremonial first pitches on Saturday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park will be thrown out by Ronald McDonald, the McDonald’s mascot, and Ambassador Satoshi Katahira, the Consulate General of Japan in New York.

That is a real sentence. That is actually happening today.

Ronald McDonald and the Japanese Consul General to throw out first pitches Saturday

Ambassador Satoshi Katahira, Consulate General of Japan in York will throw a ceremonial first pitch on behalf of the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia. Ronald McDonald is throwing out a first pitch too, because he’s literally Ronald McDonald.

Ronald McDonald is whatever. McDonald’s is everywhere, they sponsor things, it is a little weird but not completely outside the realm of normal ballpark entertainment. Fine.

Ambassador Satoshi Katahira, Consulate General of Japan in New York, is where this takes a hard left turn.

The Phillies are throwing out the first pitch for the Japanese Consulate General on the second game of the season and I have to believe there is a reason for it beyond the ceremonial.

The Phillies, like most east coast franchises, have historically struggled to attract Japanese talent. In fact, the pipeline of elite Japanese players has largely bypassed Philadelphia entirely.

Is this the Phillies organization quietly attempting to lay groundwork in the Japanese market for future international signings? I would not rule it out but our guy Satoshi Katahira just appears to be a figurehead for the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia.

That is an optimistic reading of a very strange ceremonial first pitch pairing but I am choosing to believe the front office is thinking three moves ahead here.
