Andrew Painter delivers, Phillies bounce back against the Nationals
The wait is over. Andrew Painter made his MLB debut on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park and delivered one of the more memorable pitching performances in recent Phillies history.
Painter delivered a 3-2 win over the Nationals to snap a disappointing 3-game losing streak for the Phillies. The offense finally showed signs of life and the bullpen held up. Here’s what was happening last night in South Philadelphia.
Andrew Painter
The first pitch of Andrew Painter’s major league was a 96.6 mph fastball called for a strike. Four pitches later James Wood swung over a 1-2 curveball and the debut was officially underway.
Andrew Painter Strikeout No. 1
He went 5.1 innings, one earned run, eight strikeouts, four hits, one walk, 84 pitches. His four-seam fastball touched 98.7 and averaged 96.7 for the night. He threw wipeout secondary pitches all evening, getting strikeouts on changeups, sliders, and curveballs. When he fell behind in counts he threw his secondaries for strikes anyway.

Not exactly something 22-year-olds do in their first trip to The Show, right?
The poise was the thing. In the second inning the Nationals hit back-to-back singles with nobody out and Painter got out of it without allowing a run. He then retired 13 of the next 15 batters before allowing a single to CJ Abrams in the fifth on his 84th and final pitch of the night.

Phillies Offense Shows Signs of Life…
Schwarber homered. Garcia homered. The lineup actually showed up after being invisible for three straight games.
That is the accountability portion pointing in the right direction for once.
The Bullpen
The bullpen allowed one run over 3.1 innings. Jhoan Duran closed it out in the ninth with a big assist from Brandon Marsh, who broke back on a ball hit by James Wood with two outs and made a running catch to rob him of a game-tying hit.
Save number two for Duran. Painter got the win.
The Phillies won on Opening Day against the Rangers. Then dropped two straight on Saturday and Sunday. Then lost to the Nationals on Monday. Painter walked in on Tuesday and ended all of it. The Phillies are 2-3 and back on track.
