Mickey Moniak crushes two home runs, Phillies lose finale to the Rockies 4-1

The Phillies had won nine straight against the Rockies and were looking to make it ten on Sunday afternoon at Coors Field. Instead they lost 4-1 and the entire damage came from players Philadelphia drafted and let go.

Mickey Moniak, the Phillies’ number one overall pick in 2016, hit a solo homer to the second deck in the first inning and added another solo shot in the fifth.

They will never make me hate you, Mickey Moniak

Why Not Mick…?

TJ Rumfield, a 12th round pick in 2021, hit a two-run shot in the first to put it out of reach early. Three home runs by former Phillies draft picks. That is a specific kind of painful.

Walker took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings. His two payoff pitches to Moniak and Rumfield in the first inning were the entire game. He has now allowed eleven runs in nine and a third innings across his first two starts of the season. Walker knows what he is and he knows what his role is on this team. He is here until Wheeler gets back and not much longer.

Tomoyuki Sugano made the first start by a Japanese-born Rockies pitcher at Coors Field in over 25 years and held the Phillies to one run on four hits across six innings. Adolis Garcia hit a solo homer in the second for the only Philadelphia run.

The near misses were brutal. Schwarber hit a 421-foot fly ball with two on and two outs in the fifth that would have been a game-tying homer in 28 other ballparks. Jake McCarthy caught it on the warning track at Coors.

Marchan pinch-hit in the seventh and drove one 398 feet to center where Brenton Doyle went leaping and crashing into the wall to take away what would have been extra bases.

The bullpen was the one bright spot. Mayza, Banks, and Backhus each threw a clean inning and retired nine straight. The Phillies bullpen has now faced 109 consecutive batters at Coors Field without allowing a home run.

The Phillies drop to 5-4 on the season. Colorado wins the series finale.
