Brutal: Tobias Harris scores 19 points, tells Sixers fans to get ready for the play-in as Pistons secure No. 1 seed in the East

As if the 23-point blowout was not enough, Tobias Harris was out there talking to the crowd on his way off the floor. Finished with 19 points, four rebounds, and four steals in 27 minutes for the best team in basketball and decided the moment called for words directed at Philadelphia fans.

Quick Note: Tobias Harris was right. The Sixers should get ready for the play-in. With last night’s loss, they fell a half-game behind for the sixth seed and are now back in the first play-in spot, seventh seed. Ouch.

Anways, look, I get it. Sixers fans were probably letting him have it all night. That is what Sixers fans do. No shock there but let me say what needs to be said about Tobias Harris because this city has never been fully honest about it.

Nobody in Philadelphia ever said Tobias Harris was a bad person. Most fans would tell you the opposite. He was respected in the locker room. He said the right things in every press conference. He carried himself professionally every single day he was here. He mentored young players. He was a good teammate by every account. The issue was never Tobias the human being.

The issue was Tobias the max contract player.

When you sign a five-year $180 million deal the expectations shift completely. You are no longer just a steady veteran filling a role. You are supposed to tilt playoff series. You are supposed to show up in the second round when Embiid needs a co-star. You are supposed to look like someone worth that number when the games actually matter.

And too often he disappeared when the stakes were highest. That was the frustration. Not his character. Not his professionalism. His production did not match his paycheck in the moments that counted most. That is not mistreatment. That is professional sports.

He is averaging 13.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 60 games with the Pistons this season. That is exactly what Philadelphia fans always knew he was. A solid veteran on a reasonable contract. A problem on a max deal.

Maybe talking trash gives him a little extra juice. Maybe he needed this moment. Either way he got his last night and the Sixers are the ones who have to figure out the next four games without him on their roster.
