Eagles invite David Akers’ son, Luke, to compete at rookie minicamp
The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing in a familiar name to rookie minicamp.
According to multiple sources, Northwestern kicker/punter Luke Akers, son of Eagles legend David Akers, has been invited to Birds rookie minicamp.
Eagles welcome in Akers’ son to minicamp
Luke Akers is obviously going to get attention because of the last name. That part is unavoidable. When your dad is David Akers, Eagles fans are going to care. That is just how this works.
But Luke Akers also has a real college resume of his own.
Akers spent two seasons at UCLA before moving on to Northwestern, where he became a three-year starting punter. Across his six-year college career, he punted 180 times and averaged 42.9 yards per punt. That is a lot of reps, a lot of game experience, and a decent foundation for a specialist trying to claw his way into the league.
He is not walking into rookie minicamp as some random name being handed a jersey because his dad is an Eagles legend. The last name helps get people’s attention, sure. But once he is actually on the field, none of that matters. He has to hit the ball clean. He has to show consistency. He has to prove he can be trusted in an NFL setting.
That is the life of a kicker or punter. There is no hiding. No one cares about the story once the ball is in the air.
David Akers is one of the most beloved specialists in franchise history, and now his son gets a shot to wear midnight green, even if it is only for rookie minicamp.
Maybe nothing comes of it. Most rookie minicamp tryouts are long shots by nature.
But Luke Akers has the bloodline, the college experience, and now the opportunity. That is all he can ask for. And in Philly, having the name Akers back in the building is pretty damn cool.
