WIP Jake Paul poll

94WIP is so deprived of ideas they asked their audience if the Eagles should sign Jake Paul

Writing about 94WIP isn’t fun. I genuinely hate doing it, because once upon a time, I enjoyed consuming their content. Somewhere along the way, after the old guard left and the new guard took shape, they lost the juice.

Maybe I just got older and started to see the station for what it is. That’s certainly plausible. Or maybe they went off the rails and got so deep into this schtick that there’s no turning back. Your guess is as good as mine.

Nothing captures WIP’s fall from grace more than this poll put out by the Midday Show. There’s probably context I’m missing here, but it doesn’t really matter. In no world should a serious sports-talk station be putting out polls asking their audience if the city’s football team should sign Jake Paul.

94WIP should be ashamed of themselves for letting this see the light of day

Obviously, the overwhelming majority of voters went with no on this one. If they wanted a cheap way to get engagement, mission accomplished.

It takes a real lack of creativity to let this one rip. Seriously, they couldn’t think of anything else to put out there? Nothing was more interesting than asking their audience if Howie Roseman should give Jake Paul a ring? I’d rather they ask anything else. It’s just braindead stuff. There’s no thought behind it whatsoever.

94WIP isn’t popular because they’re good at what they do. They’re popular because they exist in a city that lives for sports, and the other station, 97.5 The Fanatic, doesn’t have the money to land any real advertisers. WIP has a monopoly on sports discourse in Philadelphia that it never earned.

Or maybe it did back in the day, when it was just Angelo Cataldi and the crew hosting Wing Bowl every year and every team in the city sucked. Despair breeds good radio. They never adjusted to having well-run franchises, so now they’re stuck in this weird limbo where they either have to make something up to bitch about or fire off a poll asking listeners nonsensical questions. It’s sad, really.

Maybe one day they’ll figure it out. Until then, I’ll just stick to forming my own opinions.
