Good News: Eagles rookie Makai Lemon says he’s 100% for training camp

The Eagles got the only piece of news that mattered out of Friday: Makai Lemon says he’s fully healthy and will be “100%” when camp opens July 29.

Lemon spoke at his FlexWork Sports youth camp in Aston and confirmed the hamstring that cost him the back half of spring is behind him. He missed the second OTA practice open to the media and all of mandatory minicamp in June. Teammate Quinyon Mitchell was the one who let it slip that it was a hamstring.

Now he reports July 28 with the rest of the roster, and the actual work begins.

Why Lemon’s health matters more than any Eagles storyline this summer

There’s no dancing around this one. The Eagles shipped AJ Brown to New England and rebuilt the receiver room on the fly, Lemon in the first round, Dontayvion Wicks, Hollywood Brown, rookie tight end Eli Stowers. DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert are the holdovers.

That’s a lot of new faces, and Lemon is the one this whole thing is built around. A rookie who missed half the spring learning a brand-new Sean Mannion offense is not ideal. A rookie who shows up to camp healthy on day one is a completely different conversation.

Lemon says he used the down time the right way. “Just working on my craft, just trying to get the playbook down,” he said. “Just making sure I’m ready so when I go out there, it’s lights out.”

Good. That’s the answer.

The Eagles locker room already has him

Lemon is a Los Alamitos kid who never played football outside of California before this. Doesn’t seem to matter.

“I was walking in there, they had open arms for me,” he said. “A lot of veteran guys in my room. I’m just there to learn from them. Soak up any information I can.”

He also credited the vets for teaching him how to take care of his body and attack his prep — which, given how his spring went, is a lesson he needed sooner rather than later.

July 29. Hamstring’s fine. Playbook’s loading. Let’s see it.
