Governor Shapiro pitched LeBron James on joining the Sixers while crossing paths in NYC
The LeBron James to Philadelphia recruiting effort has officially expanded beyond the Sixers’ organization and into the executive branch of state government.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was having dinner at a New York restaurant on Wednesday night, saw LeBron James eating at the same spot, and used the chance encounter to pitch one of the greatest basketball players who ever lived on joining the Sixers.
Josh Shapiro recruiting LeBron James
I like it. When you’re the governor of a state that hasn’t had an NBA championship since 1983 and the most accomplished athlete in the history of the sport is sitting 20 feet away from your table, you don’t let the moment pass without doing your civic duty.
Here’s where we are in the LeBron James sweepstakes recruiting efforts:
- Tyrese Maxey leading the charge through personal phone calls
- Joel Embiid leveraging their Olympic gold medal relationship
- Jaylen Brown building on LeBron’s unsolicited MVP endorsement from February
- Saquon Barkley pitching him at a youth football camp
- Mike Trout pitching him at All-Star Media Day
- Bob Myers making the case on Rich Paul’s podcast
- Mike Gansey telling The Athletic that LeBron is the best player of all time
- Josh Harris having a “brief, friendly conversation” with James at Fanatics Fest
- Governor running into LeBron at a restaurant and trying to close the deal.
The Entire City Has Been Mobilized
I have never seen a free agency recruitment effort this comprehensive from any city in any sport because the Sixers haven’t just asked their players and front office to make the pitch but have apparently activated every prominent person in the Philadelphia ecosystem to deliver the same message from every possible angle whenever they happen to cross paths with LeBron James in public.
The governor of the state is doing restaurant pitches, the Super Bowl MVP running back is doing football camp pitches, the greatest baseball player of his generation is doing All-Star Game pitches, and the Sixers’ ownership, front office, and entire starting lineup are making phone calls and having conversations behind the scenes that the public only finds out about when ESPN or The Athletic reports the details days later.
LeBron James has largely secluded himself during the decision-making process and reportedly isn’t taking formal meetings with teams, which means the recruitment has shifted from traditional pitch meetings in conference rooms to a guerrilla campaign where everyone who has a connection to LeBron or a chance encounter with him at a restaurant or a public event is using that moment to deliver the Philadelphia message.
Basically the Sixers can’t get a meeting on the calendar so they’re bringing the meeting to LeBron wherever he happens to be on any given night.
Harris having a “brief, friendly conversation” with James at Fanatics Fest on Friday tells you the ownership group is engaged at the highest level and isn’t leaving the recruitment solely to the players and the front office because the man who signs the checks wants LeBron James to know directly that the financial commitment and the organizational commitment are there from the top of the ownership structure down to the last person in the building.

No Denying That LeBron James Loves The Circus
The LeBron decision has generated the kind of speculation and analysis that usually accompanies presidential elections rather than free agency decisions because the man has been so quiet about his thought process that the absence of information has created a vacuum that everyone fills with their own projections and conspiracy theories about what every gesture and every word and every restaurant sighting means for the final outcome.
LeBron James: Trust The Process
LeBron is focused on the Sixers as one of his top options alongside the Cavaliers and the Heat, and the recruitment from Philadelphia has been the most aggressive and the most creative of any team in the running.
The Sixers understand that this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that won’t come around again and they’re throwing absolutely everything at LeBron in the hope that the cumulative weight of the pitches from the players, the front office, the ownership, the governor, the athletes from other sports, and the fanbase itself is enough to tip the scale in Philadelphia’s favor.
At Some Point the Man Just Has to Make a Decision
The free agency process is now into its second week and the longer LeBron takes to announce his decision the more the speculation intensifies and the more encounters like the Shapiro restaurant meeting become fodder for the content machine that has been running nonstop since the Lakers’ season ended and LeBron’s camp started signaling that a move was possible.
Every day that passes without a decision is another day where someone in Philadelphia’s orbit bumps into LeBron at a public event and makes the pitch. The entire city of Philadelphia is collectively willing LeBron James into a Sixers uniform through the most organized and most relentless free agency recruitment campaign in NBA history.
At some point LeBron just has to make the call because the Sixers have done everything they can do short of kidnapping the man and driving him to South Philly in the back of a SEPTA bus.
The pitch has been made from every angle by every person with any connection to Philadelphia and the only thing left is for LeBron James to decide whether the city that has been chasing him harder than any city has ever chased a free agent is the place where he wants to write the final chapter of the most accomplished career the sport has ever seen.
