Deadline Rumors: The Phillies should absolutely burn the farm if that means landing Byron Buxton

Is Byron Buxton ready to leave the Twins? The Phillies rumor mill is officially spinning at full speed with a week to go before the deadline, and the biggest name to emerge is a monster. According to reports, the Phillies have discussed a major deal with the Twins that would send not only Byron Buxton to Philadelphia but also starter Bailey Ober.

The Twins are reportedly insistent on Andrew Painter and Aidan Miller headlining the return, though there’s word the Phillies aren’t comfortable moving Miller at this point which would be a massive mistake, but we’ll get into that below.

To be clear, I’m not saying any of these reports are true or are even worth discussing. Rumors are rumors, however, so we’ll sort through them together.

Byron Buxton has a full no-trade clause, and just a few weeks ago he shut down any speculation by saying he was a Twin, he was happy in Minnesota, and he had no intention of going anywhere.

That made any trade talk feel dead on arrival. Now, one week from the deadline, that stance has reportedly softened, and according to the latest rumors, Philadelphia is the one and only team Buxton would waive his no-trade clause to join.

Obviously, The Byron Buxton Fit Is Absurdly Good

Byron Buxton would fix one of the Phillies’ biggest and most obvious needs. This team has been searching for outfield help and a right-handed bat all season, and Buxton is elite at both.

He’s a Gold Glove-caliber center fielder who would immediately upgrade the outfield defense, and he’s a dangerous right-handed power-and-speed threat who would balance a lineup that leans heavily left-handed at the top of the order.

Elite defense, elite athleticism, real power, and a right-handed bat for a lineup that has struggled against left-handed pitching all year. That’s not just a good fit. That’s the exact profile of the player the Phillies have needed since the season started.

I Want to Be Very Clear: BURN THE FARM

I’m so sick of Phillies fans on Twitter debating whether trading for a player of Byron Buxton’s caliber is even worth discussing. This shouldn’t be a conversation. This should be Dombrowski on the phone with Minnesota until a deal gets done.

Oh, we have to give up Andrew Painter, who was a complete disaster this season after being deemed untouchable for years? The guy who got demoted with a 7.06 ERA? By all means, put him in the deal.

Aidan Miller, who is too young to already be dealing with major back issues and hasn’t played a single game this season? Send him too. Send them both, send whoever else the Twins want out of the farm system, and honestly, throw in whoever they want off the major league outfield depth chart while you’re at it.

No prospect is untouchable.

We go through this same tired routine every single year where fans clutch their prospects like they’re guaranteed future All-Stars, and most of them never become anything. Byron Buxton is a proven, elite, needle-moving player who is reportedly willing to come here and only here. You do not let that opportunity pass because you’re attached to a demoted pitcher and an injured infield prospect.

I Love It…Unless Mike Trout Is Actually Available

The one thing that would change my mind is if Mike Trout somehow becomes available. Trout is a loyal guy who has said over and over that he doesn’t want to leave the Angels, and I’ve been beating that drum all season.

Maybe the calculus changes now.

LeBron just signed with the Sixers. The Eagles are loaded. Trout National officially opened in South Jersey. The whole city is rolling and Trout is a lifelong Philly sports fan sitting on a last-place team an hour from home.

If Trout is genuinely on the table, go get Trout instead but if he’s not, and everything suggests he isn’t, then Buxton is the guy and the answer is the same either way.

BURN. THE. FARM.

I’ve been relatively quiet on the deadline this year, honestly, because the Phillies have too many holes to fill and not a ton of trade value to work with. The fifth starter spot, the bullpen, the right-handed bat, it’s a long list and the farm system isn’t overflowing with elite pieces to package.

That’s a tough spot for any front office.

Either way, that’s exactly why Dombrowski has to figure it out. It’s literally in his job description and the window is closing. The Phillies have been good enough to win a title for four straight years and haven’t. The fanbase is on a short leash after the last few Octobers ended in disappointment.

On top of that, you now have the Sixers with LeBron, the Eagles coming off a Super Bowl run, and the Flyers building something real, all competing for this city’s attention. The Phillies can’t afford to sit on their hands and coast into another first-round exit.

If Byron Buxton wants to be in a Phillies uniform then you have to make it happen. Send Painter, send Miller, send whatever it takes. Burn the farm. Go win a World Series.
