LeBron James has the Sixers firmly in the NBA title conversation and a year ago, that sentence would have sounded completely insane
LeBron James is a Philadelphia 76er, the city is losing its collective mind, and the sportsbooks have responded exactly the way you’d expect when the greatest player of all time suddenly joins a roster that already had an MVP, a Finals MVP, and a rising All-Star backcourt.
The Sixers are now firmly in the NBA title conversation, and a year ago that sentence would have sounded completely insane.
LeBron James announced his decision Friday morning on a two-year deal, and it came right after the Sixers had already pulled off the summer’s biggest blockbuster to land Jaylen Brown from Boston.
Mike Gansey has been rapidly repairing this franchise since taking over the front office, and now the Sixers roll out a starting five of James, Brown, Maxey, Edgecombe, and Embiid.
On paper, that’s a championship roster, and Vegas agrees.
LeBron James Effect: Sixers Odds Tell the Story
Here’s where the Sixers’ title odds landed across the major sportsbooks once word broke that LeBron was coming to Philadelphia:
- DraftKings: +900, third-best in the league
- FanDuel: +1000, fourth
- BetMGM: +1000, fourth
- Caesars: +800, fourth
- BetRivers: +1000, fourth
- Hard Rock Bet: +750, third
That’s a top-four championship contender across the board, sitting behind the Spurs, the Thunder, and depending on where you look, the defending champion Knicks. For a franchise that hasn’t been to the Finals since 2001 and was nowhere near this conversation a few months ago, going from irrelevant to a top-four title bet in a single offseason is a seismic shift.
The Public Is Already Piling In
The Sixers aren’t just a contender on paper, they’re already becoming one of the hottest bets in the country. At DraftKings more than 11,000 people placed a bet on Friday alone for the Sixers to win the championship now that LeBron is in the fold. That’s the kind of public reaction that only happens when a signing genuinely changes the trajectory of a franchise, and the money is following the roster.
They’re Not the Favorites, and That’s Fine
Let’s be clear about the reality here. The Sixers are not the outright favorites. The Spurs and Thunder are sitting at the top with much better odds, and the Knicks are lurking as the defending champs. This isn’t a case of Philadelphia suddenly being the presumptive title winner.
But that’s not the point. The point is that a year ago, the idea of the Sixers being in the championship conversation at all felt impossible. Embiid’s health was a constant question, the roster kept falling short in the second round, and there was no clear path to the top tier of the league. Now, because of one signing, they’re a legitimate top-four contender that every other team in the East has to take seriously.
LeBron James at 41 isn’t the player who dragged mediocre rosters to the Finals in his prime, and nobody’s pretending he is. He’s still good enough, still smart enough, and still impactful enough to take a talented-but-flawed roster and drag it into the championship conversation overnight. That’s the whole reason the Sixers chased him this hard, and the odds prove it worked exactly as intended.
The Sixers Health Variable Is Still the Health Variable
The one thing the sportsbooks can’t fully account for is Embiid. Joel himself said that he was entering the offseason healthy for the first time in a long time but that doesn’t account for the end-of-season freak injuries and surgeries that we have all grown accustomed to over the past several years.
Because of that, every projection for this Sixers team comes with the same asterisk it’s carried for years, which is whether the big man can stay healthy through a full season and a deep playoff run.
If Embiid is right, this roster with LeBron, Brown, Maxey, and Edgecombe is as dangerous as anyone in the East. If he’s not, the ceiling drops significantly.
That’s a worry for another day. Right now, the Sixers are a top-four championship contender, the public is betting on them in droves, and the city that has been starving for this since 1983 finally has a team that Vegas takes seriously as a title threat.
LeBron James did that. At 41 years old, he walked into Philadelphia and dragged an entire franchise into the championship conversation with one signature. That’s the kind of gravity only a handful of players in history have ever had, and now that gravity belongs to the Sixers.
Third-best odds in the league. Eleven thousand bets in a day. A starting five that looks like a title winner on paper. This is real, and it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
