LeBron James running point for the 76ers is smart usage, not a lineup shakeup

LeBron James is expected to play a significant amount of point guard for the Sixers next season, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Charania reported Monday on NBA Today that the Sixers see James as the primary initiator of Nick Nurse’s offense, setting the table for Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe.

Before anyone spirals: this is not a depth chart story. Nobody is losing their job. This is about how the offense gets organized, and it makes complete sense.

James has technically been listed at forward for most of his 23 seasons, but he has functioned as his team’s primary playmaker for basically his entire career. He is fourth on the NBA’s all-time assists list. The one season he played point guard full-time, 2019-20 with the Lakers, he led the league with 10.2 assists per game and won a championship.

At 41, this is also the smart way to use him. Let him initiate, make reads, and pick his spots as a scorer rather than absorbing the physical toll of playing his usual spot on the wing.

The reasoning is simple: the Sixers have four other guys who can put the ball in the basket. Maxey is coming off a 28.3-point, All-NBA Third Team season. Edgecombe just had a strong rookie year. Brown does his damage attacking downhill and in the mid-range. Embiid lives in the paint. The best version of this offense has all of them getting the ball on time and in rhythm, and there are few players in league history better at delivering it than James.

What it means for Maxey and Edgecombe

Nothing bad, to be clear.

Maxey has already shown he’s an elite off-ball player. During James Harden’s full season in Philly in 2022-23, Maxey put up 20.3 points per game and shot a career-high 43.4% from three playing next to a ball-dominant point guard. His shooting and cutting make him one of the better off-ball guards in the league, and playing off LeBron James should mean cleaner looks, not fewer of them.

Edgecombe’s role is a lineup question, not a status question. Bleacher Report laid out the obvious permutations, Brown at the four with Edgecombe at the three, or Dean Wade in the frontcourt with Maxey and Brown on the wings. Nurse will have to get creative, but that’s a good problem. That’s the kind of problem you sign up for when you add LeBron James on a two-year deal.

The bottom line: James playing point guard doesn’t take anything away from anyone. It just formalizes what he’s always been, one of the best passers the sport has ever seen, and puts the ball in his hands so everyone else can do what they do best.
