Eagles Training Camp Day 1: The offense finally looks different and the vibes are immaculate
Eagles training camp opened Wednesday in South Philly, and I need everyone to remain calm, because I am not going to be able to.
The offense looks different. Actually different. Not “we added a new screen package” different. Structurally, philosophically, thank-God different.
Jalen Hurts spent half his reps under center. There was play action everywhere. There was pre-snap motion on damn near every snap. Receivers were running free over the middle of the field like the ball was legally allowed to go there this whole time.
It was Day 1 of Eagles camp. No pads. Seventy minutes. I know.
Don’t care. I saw what I saw.
The Sean Mannion Eagles offense is real and it’s spectacular
For five years we watched an offense that could win a Super Bowl and also occasionally forget the forward pass existed for entire quarters. Stagnant was the polite word. The impolite words got me demonetized once.
Wednesday looked nothing like that. Mannion is running a Shanahan/McVay-style operation, under center, motion, deception, layered throws, and Hurts looked comfortable in it. He hit Dontayvion Wicks and DeVonta Smith on back-to-back throws over the middle. Smith beat Quinyon Mitchell for one of them, which matters, because Mitchell spent last summer erasing AJ Brown for fun.
Then came the play of the day. Hurts dropped a seam ball into a diving Darius Cooper with Cooper DeJean draped on him. Anticipation throw, tight window, over the middle.
Over. The. Middle.
The thing they said he couldn’t do. The thing that launched a thousand Chris Simms segments. He did it all afternoon, then stood at the podium afterward talking about “discipline and unity” and “100 alignment, zero entitlement.”
Was that about AJ Brown? I do not know. I am just asking questions.
Eagles training camp opened with basically zero bad news
Here’s the injury report from Day 1: Jonathan Greenard tweaked a pec lifting weights and starts on PUP. Howie Roseman says it’s not long-term and he’s not concerned.
That’s it. That’s the whole report. Everyone else on the 90-man roster practiced. Jihaad Campbell is back from the shoulder issue, running with the first team, and wearing No. 11 now. Jalen Carter showed up a day after signing the richest defensive tackle contract in NFL history and jumped straight into the neutral zone on Day 1, which honestly is the most reassuring thing he could’ve done.
Elsewhere in the vibes department:
Jalyx Hunt beat Jordan Mailata twice for would-be sacks. That’s the best left tackle alive getting worked by a Year 3 edge rusher we desperately need to pop. Great sign.
Tank Bigsby looked explosive, attacked a checkdown instead of waiting on it, and generally played like a man who wants touches. Give them to him.
Rookie fifth-rounder Cole Payton feathered a couple of genuinely beautiful throws, including a dime to Quez Watkins between three defenders. The kid isn’t scared. We’ve watched enough Day 3 quarterbacks around here to know what dead-on-arrival looks like. This isn’t it.
Pump the brakes? No thanks
Yes, there were drops. Yes, there were false starts. Yes, it was one unpadded practice in July and the responsible thing is to wait for real games before declaring anything.
I’ve been responsible for five straight offseasons and all it got me was watching Vic Fangio’s defense murder the offense every spring while national pundits ranked my quarterback behind backups.
So no. The offense looks modern, Hurts looks dialed, the roster is healthy, DeVonta is ready for the WR1 crown, and even the backup quarterback battle is fun.
Day 1 of Eagles training camp couldn’t have gone better.
Book it. Vibes: immaculate.
