WATCH: Alex Bregman heckled by Yankees fan, says the banging on the trash can meant a ball was coming

Alex Bregman got an earful from Yankee fans yesterday, and one heckler in particular delivered the line that should honestly follow Bregman and any other player that was on the Houston Astros during that time around for the rest of their careers.

As he stepped up to the plate, a fan reminded him that he’s banging a garbage can, dragging the sign-stealing scandal that rocked Major League Baseball right back into the spotlight. And you know what? Rightfully so.

The Houston Astros were cheaters, Bregman was a central part of it, and no amount of time passing is going to make baseball diehards forget what that organization did.

I’ll never let it go, and neither should any fan who actually cares about the integrity of the sport. The Astros stole a World Series, got a slap on the wrist, and skated away with their trophy intact. That’s not something you just move past, ya know?

I know sign-stealing is a part of the game, save it. The Houston Astros got caught. There’s really no other discussion around that part of it.

The Houston Astros Were Cheaters and COVID Bailed Them Out

For anyone who needs a refresher, here’s what the Astros actually did. The scandal broke in November 2019 when Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic published their bombshell report, with former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers going on the record about it.

Houston used a video camera in the center field seats to spy on the opposing catcher’s signs, then had players or staffers watching the live feed behind the dugout bang on a trash can to signal the batter what pitch was coming.

MLB’s investigation confirmed in January 2020 that the Astros illegally used this camera system to steal signs during the 2017 regular season and postseason, the very year they won the World Series, and again during part of 2018.

A Wall Street Journal report later revealed the operation actually started back in 2016, so none of this was a one-off, not that it would matter how many times anyways. Instead, we learned about a systematic, organized cheating operation baked into the Houston Astros for years and the hate the followed still isn’t enough to satisfy MLB fans.

The Punishment Was Historic But Not Enough

The sanctions were the most severe MLB has ever handed a club, and among the harshest for in-game misconduct in North American sports history.

The league dropped the maximum $5 million fine, stripped Houston of first- and second-round picks in 2020 and 2021, and suspended GM Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch for the 2020 season, after which the Astros fired both.

The investigation also fingered Alex Cora, Hinch’s bench coach in 2017, as a mastermind of the scheme, and Carlos Beltran, the only 2017 player named in the report, lost the Mets managerial job he’d just been hired for before he ever managed a game.

Here’s the part that still makes my blood boil.

No players were punished. Not one. MLB handed them all immunity in exchange for their cooperation, which means the guys who were actually up at the plate banging cans and knowing what pitch was coming, guys like Bregman, faced zero consequences.

The Astros kept the 2017 World Series title. They cheated their way to a championship, got caught red-handed, and still got to keep the ring. That’s the great failure of how MLB handled this whole thing.

Alex Bregman Was Right in the Middle of It

So no, I have zero sympathy when Alex Bregman hears it from opposing crowds. He was a key member of that 2017 team. He benefited directly from the scheme. The fact that he or any other players on the Astros got immunity and skated while the coaches and executives took the fall doesn’t make him innocent, it just makes him lucky.

Every time he steps into a hostile ballpark and a fan brings up the trash can, that’s the sport’s diehards enforcing the accountability that Major League Baseball refused to.

The heckling is the punishment the league never gave him. Fans have long memories, and this is one of those things that doesn’t fade with time. Honestly, it should happen more often. The garbage can chants, the trash can memes, the reminders in every visiting stadium, that’s the tax Alex Bregman and the rest of those Astros pay for the rest of their careers, and they earned every bit of it.

The Astros Got Bailed Out by COVID, but We Remember

The Astros kind of got bailed out by the shortened, fan-less 2020 COVID season. The scandal broke right before everything shut down, and instead of having to walk into packed hostile ballparks all season long and face the full wrath of every fanbase in baseball, they got a weird empty-stadium year where nobody was in the stands to let them have it.

The universe handed the Houston Astros a break exactly when they deserved the loudest possible reckoning.

Thankfully, there’s still baseball fans that won’t forget, and the ones who care about this sport are going to keep bringing it up forever. That’s what happened yesterday and hopefully, it will happen more often, every time Bregman or any of those Astros walk into a stadium full of people who remember exactly what they did.
