Feast or Get Exposed: The Phillies schedule in August is about as soft as it gets

The Phillies just stumbled through the dog days at 3-10 in their last 13, losing series to bad teams and finding new ways to lose winnable games.

Now they flip the calendar to August, and here’s the thing that should either excite you or terrify you depending on how you’re feeling about this team.

The schedule gets easy… like, really easy. If the Phillies are the contender they claim to be, this is the month where they prove it, because the competition is not the problem in August.

There isn’t a single juggernaut on that list. The Diamondbacks at 58-52 are the best team they’ll face all month, and that’s for exactly one game. The Twins and Marlins are barely above water at 56-55. Everyone else is sitting right at .500 or well below it.

This Is a Buffet, and the Phillies Need to Feast

Look, I know the vibes are at an all-time low with the Phillies right now but I woke up this morning and looked at that August schedule and god dammit, I just want this team to show some fight.

The postseason is about who’s hot and who’s not at the end of September. The Phillies haven’t been hot at all. That sucks, I know, however there’s a lot of baseball left.

The Blue Jays are 51-69. The Angels are a dismal 42-68. Those are two of the worst teams in baseball, and the Phillies get three games against each. That’s six games against clubs that have essentially packed it in, and a real contender needs to go something like 5-1 or 6-0 in that stretch, no exceptions.

The Nationals show up four times, and they’re 55-56 and going nowhere. The Cardinals appear twice for three games each, sitting at 54-56. The Orioles and Mariners are both around or below .500. Even the Twins and Marlins, the only two clubs on the slate with winning records, are hovering right at 56-55 and are far from scary. This is not a gauntlet. It’s a month full of mediocre baseball teams, and the Phillies have zero excuse not to pile up wins.

The Marlins Rematch Better Go Differently

You’ll notice the Marlins are back on the schedule for three games, and after what just happened in Miami, where the Phillies blew a 6-0 lead and lost a series to a team that had dropped 12 straight, this one carries some weight.

That was one of the low points of the entire season. The Marlins have since climbed back to 56-55, so they’re not the same free-falling club, but that doesn’t change anything. If the Phillies have any pride at all, they’ll handle Miami this time around, because losing to that team twice in one month would be genuinely embarrassing for a club with World Series aspirations.

The Phillies need to stop acting like babies

The Phillies have spent the last two weeks getting exposed by good teams like the Dodgers and getting embarrassed by bad ones like the Marlins. The one thing they can’t do anymore is blame the competition, because August hands them a soft landing spot to get right. This is the month to fatten up the record, build some momentum, and reclaim breathing room in the Wild Card race, where they currently sit just 1.5 games up on the final spot.

If Dombrowski adds the bullpen help and the bat this team needs at the deadline, and the roster takes care of business against a schedule this weak, the Phillies could go on a serious run and put real distance between themselves and the pack.

If they DON’T take advantage, if they keep losing series to .500-ish teams and blowing leads against clubs they should beat, then it stops being about matchups and starts being about the roster and the effort, and then get an early head start of the Eagles and Sixers because we are going to be dead in the water come September.

The schedule is a gift.

28 games in August and almost all of them against teams the Phillies should beat. There’s no Dodgers series to hide behind, no gauntlet of elite competition to blame. Just a long stretch of beatable opponents and a team that has to prove it’s still a contender.
