Phillies land lefty reliever Brooks Raley from the Mets

The Phillies are still working the phones, and according to Bob Nightengale, with the deal confirmed by Will Sammon and Jayson Stark of The Athletic, the Phillies have agreed to acquire left-handed reliever Brooks Raley from the Mets in exchange for prospects Luke Gabrysh and John Spikerman.

After the Luis Arraez deal added a bat, Dombrowski turned right around and went after the bullpen, which is exactly the sequence of events this fanbase has been begging for.

Finally, Some Bullpen Help

The bullpen has been the biggest problem on this team all season, and it’s been especially ugly from the left side. This relief corps outside of Duran has been one of the worst in baseball since June, and the loss of Brad Keller for the year gutted whatever depth they had.

Adding a proven veteran left-hander like Brooks Raley is a direct response to the exact weakness that’s been blowing games and torching leads all summer.

Brooks Raley is coming to Philly

Brooks Raley is an experienced big-league reliever who knows how to pitch in high-leverage spots, and crucially, he gives Mattingly a legitimate left-handed option out of the pen, something this bullpen has sorely lacked with guys like Alvarado and Banks struggling all year.

A steady lefty who can navigate the middle innings and get big outs against left-handed hitting is exactly the kind of piece that helps build a real bridge to Duran in the ninth, which has been the missing ingredient down the stretch.

Taking From the Division Rival Mets

There’s an extra little bonus here, and that’s that the Phillies pulled this arm out of the Mets’ bullpen. Anytime you can strengthen your own roster by taking a useful piece away from a division rival, that’s a win on two fronts.

The Mets are sellers, the Phillies are buyers, and Dombrowski went into Queens and grabbed a reliever to help Philadelphia’s October push. I’ll always take that.

The Cost Was Reasonable

The price was prospects Luke Gabrysh and John Spikerman heading to New York, which is a perfectly sensible cost for a veteran bullpen arm. This is the burn-the-farm mentality working exactly as it should.

You’re not touching your absolute top guys for a middle-relief piece, but you’re willing to move real prospects to shore up a genuine weakness, and that’s the balance a contender has to strike.

Combined with the Ramon Marquez package that landed Arraez, Dombrowski is clearly showing a willingness to part with prospect capital to win now, which is precisely what the moment called for.

KEEP GOING DAVE

Let’s take stock of what’s happened over the last 24 hours. The Phillies added a three-time batting champion in Arraez to fix their on-base and contact problems.

They grabbed Caleb Kilian for bullpen depth in that same deal and now they’ve added a veteran lefty reliever in Brooks Raley to directly attack the bullpen’s biggest weakness.

Brooks Raley is a good, sensible addition that fills a real need, and paired with the Arraez deal it shows the Phillies are serious about competing with the best in the National League.

We need more, specifically a right handed bat.
