Phillies Luis Arraez Lineup Nationals

Phillies will debut a brand new lineup and new positions as the Luis Arraez era officially begins

On Tuesday the Phillies rolled out the roster they’re going to live and die with for the next two months. Luis Arraez, Caleb Kilian, and Brooks Raley have all reported, a couple of guys got shipped to Lehigh Valley to make room, and Mattingly posted the first lineup featuring the great infield reshuffle.

Buckle up, because this is the new normal.

Phillies Roster Moves

Here’s what the Phillies made official before Tuesday’s game against Washington:

  • Second baseman Luis Arraez reported and will wear No. 4
  • Right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian reported and will wear No. 56
  • Left-handed pitcher Brooks Raley reported and will wear No. 30
  • Left-handed pitcher Kyle Backhus was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley
  • Gabriel Rincones Jr. was optioned to Lehigh Valley following Monday’s game
  • As previously announced, right-hander Seth Johnson was dealt to the Athletics

Luis Arraez takes No. 4, and Backhus and Rincones Jr. drew the short straws to clear roster spots for the new arms. Standard stuff. Somebody always has to go.

Phillies New Lineup (For Now)

  • DH Schwarber
  • SS Turner
  • RF Harper
  • 2B Arraez
  • 1B Bohm
  • C Realmuto
  • LF Marsh
  • 3B Stott
  • CF Crawford
  • P Luzardo

And there it is…

The whole domino chain in one graphic. Arraez hitting cleanup at second. Harper in right field batting third. Stott over at third base. Bohm at first. Trea Turner, come hell or high water, still planted at shortstop, exactly like good ol’ Davey Dombrowski stubbornly insisted he would be.

So Let’s Talk About It…

Hitting Arraez cleanup is a genuinely intriguing call, and I actually love the bat in that lineup. The league’s leading hitter, a guy who basically never strikes out and sprays line drives all over the yard, dropped in behind Schwarber, Turner, and Harper?

That’s a real problem for opposing pitchers, and it’s the exact kind of contact-and-on-base presence this homer-or-nothing offense has been begging for. If this clicks, the lineup gets deeper and more relentless in a way it hasn’t been all season. That part, I’m on board with.

The defense is where I start sweating.

Bryson Stott at third, a position he hasn’t manned since 2022. Bryce Harper in right field, which he hasn’t played since 2022. That’s a whole lot of guys learning new spots on the fly in the middle of a playoff race, and there’s zero margin for error over the next two months.

Alec Bohm stinks. Moving everyone around the infield to cater to him is stupid. Even then, the entire house of cards is built on Trea Turner suddenly playing clean shortstop, and I’ll believe that when I see it, because the guy leads the league in errors and moving everyone else around him doesn’t magically fix the hands of the man in the middle.

Dombrowski wouldn’t even discuss moving him. We’ll see how that ages.

Luzardo Better Show Up Tonight

On the mound it’s Jesus Luzardo, and this is a big spot for him. He just handed a 6-0 lead back to the Marlins, and his splits are downright unsettling: a 5.53 ERA at home versus a 2.01 ERA on the road.

The Phillies need the road version of Luzardo to finally remember his home address, because with the rotation as thin as it is after Dombrowski whiffed on a starter at the deadline, they can’t afford another home clunker from one of the supposed untouchables.

Here We Go…lol

So this is the roster. This is the plan. Arraez and his .324 average in the middle of the order, three guys playing out of position, two new bullpen arms, and a top three that has to stay healthy or this whole thing falls apart.

I’ve made my feelings about the deadline plenty clear, and the lack of a starter still gnaws at me. But the games don’t stop for my complaints, and this is the group that’s got to go win baseball games starting tonight.

The August schedule is soft. The Nationals are bad. The new pieces are in the building. It’s time to stop talking about the moves and start seeing whether this reconfigured roster can actually do something. Get Arraez rolling, pray the defensive shuffle holds, get a good one out of Luzardo, and keep the winning streak alive.

First pitch 6:40 on NBCSP. The new era starts now. Let’s see if it’s any good.
