Jaylen Brown Sixers Skydiving

Jaylen Brown wants to take LeBron, Embiid, Maxey and VJ skydiving if the Sixers win it all and I couldn’t possibly think of a worse idea

Jaylen Brown went skydiving a few days ago in Egypt to conquer his fear of heights, and every longtime Sixers fan felt their stomach drop the second they heard about it. Now, I can actually respect that Jaylen Brown is out here completely ignoring the curse that is the Philadelphia 76ers but we need to pump the brakes on this one.

Jaylen Brown is out there jumping out of planes without a care in the world. My first thought is that’s the energy of a man who believes in this team. I love the confidence, obviously, but at the same time, brother, we should probably stay away from the skydiving thing, because that might just be the final straw for the Sixers as an organization.

You have to understand how this works if you’re new here. Disaster strikes the Philadelphia 76ers at any given moment, from freak injuries to things that happen on the court that would make your head explode.

I’ve Lived Through the Curse. All of It.

I suffered through the entire Process, so I know exactly what this organization is capable of doing to a person’s soul. I have watched a basketball bounce off the rim in Toronto approximately one million times in my nightmares.

I watched Ben Simmons (come home) pass up a wide-open dunk on Trae Young in a Game 7 and I have quite literally been watching the Joel Embiid Final Destination movie play out in real time since the man arrived in Philadelphia over a decade ago, one freak injury at a time, each one more creatively devastating than the last.

That’s the context Jaylen Brown doesn’t have yet.

Jaylen Brown hasn’t lived it and doesn’t know how quickly and how absurdly this thing can go sideways. So while I admire the fearlessness, I also know better than to trust that the curse just disappears because we signed LeBron James.

This franchise has found a way to snatch heartbreak from the jaws of joy for my entire adult life, and I’m not about to start tempting it now by having our guys leap out of airplanes over the pyramids.

Luckily LeBron James wasn’t having it with Jaylen Brown

If We Are Thinking The Curse Is Broken, Then Maybe…

Here’s the thing. If we’re truly on the same page that landing Jaylen Brown and LeBron James finally broke the curse and restored order to Sixers basketball, then maybe, maybe, we can eventually talk about a team skydiving trip down the road.

I’m open to the possibility that the darkness has lifted but I’m not betting the entire existence of the franchise on it until I’ve got some hardware to show for it.

To be clear, one championship isn’t enough to earn the skydiving privilege. These things don’t come around often. I mean hell, this city has waited since 1983 to return to glory, so if we win it all this year, the answer is still no.

We don’t celebrate by jumping out of planes. We run it back, we go win another one, and THEN, once we’ve proven the curse is well and truly dead by going back-to-back, we can start having the skydiving conversation.

Feet on the Ground Until Further Notice

Jaylen Brown got one skydiving trip past the Basketball Gods on a technicality, likely because he hadn’t put the jersey on yet. Now that he’s officially one of us, the free pass is gone. Under no circumstances does anybody associated with this organization go anywhere near a plane with a parachute until we’ve got multiple banners hanging in the rafters.

Win one. Then win another. Go back-to-back, prove the curse is dead, and then we’ll talk about jumping out of planes. Until then, keep your feet firmly on the ground, fellas. We’ve suffered enough. Let’s not hand the Basketball Gods the easiest layup of all time.
