Report: Eagles set to lose their big free agent EDGE for all of training camp

The Eagles are about to spend the summer answering a question they didn’t sign up to answer this early: what happens to the pass rush when the guy you traded two third-round picks for doesn’t play a single snap of training camp?

Vic Fangio confirmed it Tuesday. Jonathan Greenard isn’t close. “We ain’t going to see him for another couple weeks, at least,” Fangio said. Do the math on that timeline and it’s not hard to see Greenard missing the entire camp and most of the preseason with a pec strain he picked up lifting weights before he ever put on the pads.

Howie Roseman called this “nothing we’re concerned about” when camp opened. That was the company line. It’s starting to look like wishful thinking.

This isn’t a depth signing. The Eagles sent two third-round picks to Minnesota for Greenard, then handed him a four-year, $98 million extension that makes him the 12th-highest-paid edge rusher in football. That’s a real bet on a guy who made the Pro Bowl in 2024 off 24.5 sacks across two seasons, and then got limited to 3.0 sacks in 12 games last year with a shoulder injury. He was supposed to be the answer for the pass rush after Jaelan Phillips walked in free agency. Right now he’s a guy in meetings who can’t practice.

Fangio’s not hiding his concern either. He brought up pre-2011 CBA holdouts unprompted, guys who sat out camp over contracts and then got hurt once the season started because their bodies weren’t “calloused” to playing football again. That’s the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, on the record, comparing his $98 million free agent to first-round holdouts who broke down in Week 3. Not exactly a vote of confidence.

The Eagles’ depth chart isn’t waiting around

Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith Jr. are soaking up the first-team reps right now, with Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa rounding out the room. That’s fine for August. It’s a different conversation in September if Greenard is still working his way back into football shape while the Eagles are trying to generate pressure against real offenses that count.

Nobody’s panicking yet. But if this is a Week 1 or Week 2 problem too, the Eagles are opening the season with a $98 million edge rusher who hasn’t played a snap in Fangio’s scheme, hasn’t been hit in months, and is walking straight into the exact injury risk his own coordinator just described out loud.
