Some genuinely awful news hit the timeline late Sunday, and it’s the kind that stops you in your tracks. Hayden Panettiere, the actress who so many of us grew up watching, has died at just 36 years old.

Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed the news in a statement, saying, “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her, and to the millions who watched her onscreen.” He asked for privacy as the family takes time to process the loss.

Hayden Panettiere was a LEGEND

She started in commercials when she was only 11 months old and basically grew up on our screens. A lot of us first knew her as the young girl in Remember the Titans, and then she became a genuine star as Claire Bennet on Heroes, the indestructible cheerleader at the center of that show’s iconic “save the cheerleader, save the world” run.

That line was everywhere for a while, and she was the face of it.

Hayden Panettiere played Juliette Barnes on Nashville and showed up in the Scream franchise, among plenty of other roles. Her credits ran all the way back to soap operas as a little kid and forward through some of the most memorable TV of the 2000s and 2010s. She was a constant, a familiar face who felt like she’d been part of the pop-culture furniture our entire lives, because she basically had been.

What makes this even harder is how candid Hayden Panettiere had been lately about how difficult things had gotten. Just this past May, she released a memoir titled “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” where she opened up about postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse, and loss. She had also spoken publicly and painfully about the grief of losing her brother.

There was real courage in that. She didn’t hide from her struggles. She put them out into the world in the hope that being honest about them might help somebody else, and that’s a big part of why so many people felt so connected to her.

The details are still limited.

Hayden Panettiere died in Greenville, South Carolina, and police said the preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances, with the case still under investigation and no cause of death released. She would have turned 37 on Friday, which somehow makes it hurt even more.

Gone way too young, and it sucks no matter how you slice it. Damn.

So rest in peace, Hayden Panettiere. You were a huge part of a whole generation’s childhood, and you’ll be remembered as exactly what your dad called you: an incredible light and a force of nature. A true millennial legend.
