Philadelphia masked man needs a perp walk down Broad Street when they finally catch this creep

The Philadelphia masked man running around Center City at 5 a.m. terrorizing joggers needs to be in a cell, and he needs to get there the hard way.

You’ve heard the timeline by now. Chucky mask. Cell phone out, filming the whole thing like content matters more than the people he’s scaring half to death. Refused service at a Dunkin’ because apparently even Dunkin’ has standards he couldn’t clear. Tried to force his way into a La Colombe. Got in front of a woman jogging near City Hall, held the phone in her face, and asked her if she was ready to die.

She ran. She screamed. She hurt her leg getting away from him. That’s not a bit. That’s a grown city dealing with a guy who thought terrifying strangers before sunrise was a fun way to spend a Wednesday.

What this guy actually did to people

A woman named Jameka saw him coming before the jogger did, yelled a warning across the street, and then got his attention turned on herself. She kicked him in the chest. He backed down. Good for her. Another woman, Kate Egan, said the same guy went after one of her coworkers at the coffee shop before a security guard ran him off.

Cops say he’s a teenager or young adult, somewhere between 16 and 20, and they’re not even sure he was armed. He implied it. Nobody saw a weapon. Doesn’t matter. You don’t get to walk up on women alone in the dark and ask them if they’re ready to die and get the “maybe it was just a bit” defense. Police are looking into whether this was some kind of online stunt. Great. Add “almost got someone seriously hurt for views” to the charge sheet.

Why the Philadelphia masked man deserves the walk of shame

Here’s the deal. He’s getting arrested. Terroristic threats, harassment, simple assault, intimidation, that’s the real punishment, and it should stick. But this is Philadelphia, and Philadelphia has a tradition for guys who do something this stupid in front of an entire city.

We threw snowballs at drunk Santa Claus. We’ve built entire municipal legends out of throwing stuff at people who had it coming. So once this kid is in cuffs, before he disappears into the system, give this city ten minutes. Walk him down Broad Street. Let everybody who works Center City mornings, the coffee shop staff, the joggers, the guy who almost got run down near Dilworth Plaza, stand on the sidewalk and scream “shame” while a soft pretzel bounces off his shoulder. Nobody’s hurting him. Nobody needs to. Philadelphia just needs the moment back that he stole from a bunch of people trying to get to work.

He gets the cuffs. He gets the charges. He gets the walk. And then he gets to explain to a judge why he thought a Chucky mask and a phone camera were worth all of this.

Anybody who ran into this guy and hasn’t called it in yet, do it. 215-686-TIPS. Let’s close this out.
