Phillies add bullpen depth, sign Nestor Cortes to a major league contract

Better late than never, Dave. The Phillies have reached agreement with free-agent pitcher Nestor Cortes on a Major League contract, per sources, adding a veteran arm to a team that has been crying out for rotation depth ever since the deadline.

It’s not the splashy starter everyone wanted back on August 3, but it’s a smart, low-risk flier on a guy who was in the majors not that long ago, and it could directly address the biggest hole on this roster.

Nestor Cortes and the Phillies…

Nestor Cortes, 31, is a proven big-league arm when healthy. He’s thrown in eight MLB seasons, spending the bulk of his career with the Yankees, where he posted a solid 3.61 ERA with 564 strikeouts in 555.2 innings.

That’s an effective mid-rotation starter at his best, a crafty lefty with a funky delivery who knows how to pitch.

The catch, and there’s always a catch with a signing like this, is the health and the recent track record. Nestor Cortes underwent surgery on his throwing arm last October and was expected to be out nine or ten months but I guess he’s healthy now, has been throwing for teams recently, drawing interest from several clubs before landing in Philadelphia.

The caveat is that Nestor Cortes was BRUTAL in 2025. After getting traded to Milwaukee in the Devin Williams deal, he posted a 9.00 ERA in eight innings before a left elbow flexor strain shut him down.

He was then dealt to San Diego at the deadline, where he made just six starts and put up a 5.47 ERA. So the recent results are ugly, but a lot of that is tangled up with the injuries. A healthy Cortes is a different pitcher than the banged-up version we saw last year.

Cortes joins a Phillies team sitting 5.5 games back of the Braves in the NL East but firmly in control of a Wild Card spot and playing its best baseball in a while, winners of five straight. Adding a veteran arm with upside to a team that’s rolling is a nice piece of business. Health permitting, this could quietly be one of the more useful under-the-radar additions of the summer.
