THE FIGHTINS: Phillies rally in the 9th, walk it off with a Schwarbomb to win ninth straight game

I don’t even know where to begin with this one. The Phillies did next to nothing all afternoon, sat there dead in the water, and then produced the kind of ninth inning that will make you believe that we’re all the way back.

Down to their last strike THREE separate times, they exploded for six two-out runs to shock the Cardinals 6-4 in front of a sellout Citizens Bank Park crowd on Sunday, completing the sweep and running their winning streak to an incredible NINE games.

Kyle Schwarber ended it with a walk-off homer, his major-league-leading 39th.

For eight and a half innings this was a dud. The Phillies had a grand total of four hits entering the ninth and looked completely lifeless at the plate. It had all the makings of the streak ending quietly, a wasted afternoon against St. Louis All-Star closer Riley O’Brien. You could feel the deflation setting in.

The Ninth Inning for the Ages

Bryce Harper led off the ninth with a double to at least give everyone a pulse. Then two quick outs, and it looked over.

From there, the Phillies strung together four straight hits and a walk against a good closer, refusing to make that final out no matter how many times they were one strike away from going home.

Edmundo Sosa delivered the huge blow, a bases-loaded double that drove in three and completely flipped the inning.

Then Bryan De La Cruz tied the whole thing up with a clutch base hit and with the crowd absolutely losing its mind, Kyle Schwarber stepped up and did what Kyle Schwarber does, launching a walk-off homer to dead center for his MLB-best 39th of the season to end it.

Six two-out runs. Down to the last strike three times. All of it against an All-Star closer. You genuinely cannot script this stuff.

This Is What a Team of Destiny Looks Like

This was pure heart, pure refusal to quit, the kind of inning that only happens when a team truly believes it’s never out of a game. Three times they were a single strike from the streak ending, and three times they kept the line moving.

Of course it was Schwarber putting the exclamation point on it. The big fella has been the heartbeat of this lineup all year, leading the majors in homers, and there’s nobody you’d rather have up in that spot. No. 39, walk-off, sweep complete, streak alive. Storybook stuff.

Phillies Have Won Nine Straight and are Rolling

The winning streak is at nine games, the longest of the season, and this team is playing the best baseball in all of Major League Baseball right now. They just swept the Cardinals, their third straight series sweep, and they’re doing it in every way imaginable, blowouts, walk-offs, comebacks, small ball, the long ball, all of it.

When you can win a game you had absolutely no business winning, down to your last strike three times, that’s when you know something special might be brewing.

A month ago this team looked cooked. Now they’re riding a nine-game streak, surging up the standings, and pulling off miracles in the ninth inning. The vibes could not possibly be higher.

Down to the last strike three times, and they still found a way. Schwarber walks it off. Nine in a row. This team is magic right now, and I don’t want it to end.
