Yesterday wasn’t the first time the Phillies scored six runs against the St. Louis Cardinals in the ninth inning and the last time it happened, it changed the entire course of the Phillies organization.
Sunday’s magical six-run ninth inning to beat the Cardinals gave me the most incredible sense of déjà vu, and if you’re a real one, you already know exactly where I’m going with this.
Back in 2022, I was watching that game out in Arizona on a trip with Phans of Philly, and let me tell you, the reaction to that six-run ninth was pure, unfiltered chaos. Complete joy, grown men losing their minds, an eruption of pandemonium that ended up going massively viral.

Take yourself back. Wild Card Game 1, on the road in St. Louis, and the Phillies erupted for six runs in the ninth inning to steal a game and pick up their first postseason win since 2011.
That was the moment the 2022 Red October run truly ignited, the beginning of the magical ride all the way to the World Series. Six runs in the ninth against the Cardinals, and a franchise that had been wandering in the playoff wilderness for over a decade suddenly came roaring back to life.
Now, here we are, and the Phillies do the EXACT same thing to the EXACT same team. Six runs in the ninth against St. Louis. If you don’t believe in a little baseball magic, in a little poetic history repeating itself, then I don’t know what to tell you.
The Cardinals are apparently just destined to be on the wrong end of Phillies ninth-inning miracles, and I could not be happier about it.

So to the Cardinals and their fanbase, it must really sting to be the punching bag in these ninth-inning nightmares. First 2022, and now 2025. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier that St. Louis has to deal with this all over again. Some teams are just cursed matchups, and it sure looks like the Cardinals are ours to torment when the game’s on the line late.
The 2022 six-run ninth launched a World Series run. Who’s to say what this one launches? The Phillies are riding a nine-game streak, playing the best baseball in the sport, and pulling off the same kind of last-strike magic that defined that special October. History has a funny way of repeating itself, and if Sunday was any indication, this team might just have another magical run left in it.
Six runs in the ninth against the Cardinals. Again. Some things never get old.
