Za’Darius Smith explains why he really left the Eagles, and Philly should respect it

Za’Darius Smith left the Eagles last season with no real explanation, and Eagles fans filled that silence with theories. Now we have the truth, and it makes every one of those theories look small.

Smith said this week that he got a phone call from his mother’s doctor. She didn’t have much time left. He told the team, they didn’t want him to go, and he retired anyway because there was no other way to be there for her. She died. Then his grandmother died. Then his father died. He said he was in a dark place. That’s not a guy dodging a locker room or checking out on a season. That’s a man choosing his mother over his career, in real time, with no guarantee football would ever be there for him again.

Anybody who’s lost someone knows there is no version of that decision that’s easy, and there’s no version of it that needs to be justified to a fan base. Smith didn’t have to explain any of this. He could have let the retirement sit as a mystery forever. He chose to tell it anyway, and it’s a gut punch, the doctor’s call, three deaths in a stretch, and still finding his way back onto a football field.

He tried Cleveland first. The money wasn’t there. Atlanta came calling after losing Jalon Walker for the year and James Pearce Jr. to suspension, and it turned into more than a transaction. Smith is from Alabama. He said his mother always wanted him with the Falcons. He’s bringing buses of her church family to games in her honor. That’s not a depth chart move. That’s a man building a tribute out of a football contract.

Nothing but respect

He connected with Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich over grief — Ulbrich lost his wife to cancer — and by the sound of it, that conversation mattered to both of them. Then Smith showed up to his first preseason game back and was the first guy sprinting onto the field to celebrate a teammate’s touchdown, smiling like he hadn’t smiled in years. Because he hadn’t.

Eagles fans don’t need to relitigate the retirement. We got an explanation nobody was owed, about a loss nobody should have to explain. Za’Darius Smith gave the Eagles five good games, gave his mother his last months, and now gets to chase 100 career sacks with the team she wanted for him. That’s a season worth rooting for, even from Philadelphia.
