Eagles add depth receiver from Miami ahead of preseason finale

The Eagles made a wide receiver move Thursday that barely qualifies as news, except for how many times it’s happened to the same guy.

Philadelphia signed Tahj Washington and waived Brandon Hayes. This is not new information if you’ve been paying attention to Hayes’ Eagles tenure, because the Eagles have signed and waived Brandon Hayes so many times this offseason it should count as a bit.

Hayes signed May 27. Waived June 5. Signed again August 5. Waived August 15. Signed again August 21. Waived again August 27.

Six transactions. One guy. Nobody outside the building could tell you why.

In comes Washington, a 7th-round pick by Miami in 2024 out of USC. He missed his entire rookie season with a torn ACL, then played six games last year with three catches for 37 yards. The Dolphins waived him earlier this week, and the Eagles scooped him up days later.

The USC pedigree is the actual story here. Washington spent two years at Memphis before transferring to USC, where in 2023 he led the team with 59 catches for 1,062 yards and eight touchdowns, and led the Pac-12 in yards per catch. That 2023 USC team also had Makai Lemon, the Eagles’ first-round pick this year. So Washington already knows one of the guys he’s fighting to catch passes for.

Roster cuts to 53 are Sunday. The Eagles close out preseason Friday at the Linc against the Bengals, which is likely where Washington gets his first look in a Birds jersey.

Twelve wide receivers are now on the roster: DeVonta Smith, Makai Lemon, Dontayvion Wicks, Hollywood Brown, Elijah Moore, Darius Cooper, Samori Toure, Britain Covey, Quez Watkins, Danny Gray, Erik Ezukanma, and now Washington. Not all of them make it to Sunday.
